The cartridge is a Sonotone 9TA(HC) which was one of the better ceramic cartridges.
I used a pair of these cartridges back in the 70s in my mobile disco. Their tracking ability was excellent, even in the harsh disco environment, and they sounded great.
A replacement stylus should be available - you now know what to search for.
Thanks for all the help 🙂
It's what I would have expected Dynatron to have fitted. £10 for a new replacement needle seems low for such a well regarded turntable? I need to solder some rca's to the outputs and see if it sounds any better after the needle change.
£10 would buy you a sapphire stylus.
Search to see if a diamond stylus (for the 45/33 rpm side) is available.

This one is original stock (better than a modern copy) and has two diamond styli, one on each flip-over side, for playing 45/33 rpm records.

No 78 rpm sapphire side, which I expect you won't require.

There's always the possibility that the entire cartridge needs replacing, but first thing to do is try a replacement stylus.
Another cause of distortion is an incorrectly balanced pickup arm and an incorrectly set tracking force.
Set the down force to 4 grams to suit the Sonotone cartridge.
The full procedure is described on page 4 of this service information for the manual version of your turntable - under the heading "Pickup Styus Force".

I'm impressed with the sound of the speakers for 54 years old. I was born in 65 so this could have been a life long friend lol.
As requested needle porn attached 🙂

I did attach the turntable to the amp and it did sound distorted, I will swap the needle first after advice from people.
Maybe it sounds distorted because you are using the 78 Rpm needle on micro groove vinyl.
What amp are you using?
You are not using the wrong input as I already mentioned?

Listen to what academia50 is saying as he is asking for important troubleshooting information.
As he has correctly pointed out, a ceramic cartridge is unlikely to work well into the inputs of a modern amplifier. Additional circuitry may be required - see attached example relating to a similar Decca Deram ceramic cartridge.
academia50 has also suggested fitting a moving magnet (MM) cartridge. This would match the Phono input of a modern amplifier perfectly. The Audio Technica AT-3600L is an inexpensive replacement which would suit the Garrard turntable.

Currently the headshell is wired to the special connector that plugs into the socket at the rear of the Sonotone 9TA, so you would have to replace the headshell wiring with four individual cartridge headshell connectors - as shown in the second attachment.

Yes Galu, i agree
Great price and great performance of this AT, I read many very favorable buyer reviews at the link.
The only "pega"
(- as the Spanish say, against, inconvenience -) would be to use an MM cartridge in automatic mode, it seems to me, due to the strength of the cantilevers .....
That is why I would use it in manual mode and as Galu said, the arm has the necessary adjustment for a correct performance.
It's not an MC like this, but it's a huge leap forward in sound quality.....😱😀

Using the dimensions in the first pic, I get 16L as the enclosure size, (~0.6 cu ft), so seems like there's something dodgy about that calculator.
You forgot the panel thickness 🙁, so ~10.98 L/0.39 ft^3 is correct and still need to deduct the driver's, any vent volume.
Regardless, I was questioning whether it was the size in the console or just a driver calculation, but see it's all moot now, so never mind.
