Absolutely normal.

No, I don't think so.
I've seen a Marantz SR-9300 top of the range receiver without the lid (on an audio show !!!).
It is cramped with tons of very bad op-amps, tens of boards, lowsy assembling.
I don't know why a mid-range denon would be better than this.
Don't compare an AV receiver with a GC, because they have nothing in common.
One of them was not made for music.

I know now, but i never believed it until i heard it. I always thought that most of you guys were exaggerating, because when you build something yourself, your opinion is coloured.carlosfm said:Absolutely normal.
Have you ever seen the inside of a mid-range Denon receiver ? The GC only uses a couple of mass-produced €3,- chips, so i don't understand what you are trying to say.No, I don't think so.

I know, very different type of amps, my point is that i really didn't expect the GC to be that good.Don't compare an AV receiver with a GC, because they have nothing in common.

I've been inside, and listened extensively (at home) to a Denon PMA2000 integrated stereo amp.
It looks quite impressive but sincerely, it sounds horrible.
And it costs around 1,500€.

I like these chips because they sound very good, otherwise I wouldn't loose my time and money with them, I would go and buy a commercial amp and that's it.
But I've got to the conclusion long ago that I have no money to buy a commercial amp that satisfies me.
I'm sorry to disappoint you, but as AV amps go, and if you like to listen to music, stay out of that.
I think this is a good advice.

You're welcome!
Here, a view of the vintage chips, for size comparison...
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

😱
whoa!!
damn, those things were huge!
how do they sound? 😀
do they even need a heatsink?

You can open the lid and look inside.😎
cool 😀

Yeah! This has been my conclusion also. I learned this already when I setup my first regulated IGC music system 6 months ago. 😀
But only after spending so much money on so called rated AV.

I dont need to learn the 2nd time around. 😎

STK are not really chips (as in IC - integrated circuits - like the LM chips) - but basically a miniaturized amp circuit board - which explains their package size. Different models have different topologies.
I could not resist, and opened one (Magnus will excuse me, as he will get the open one and 8 closed and hopefully useable pieces):

/Edit: ... and I think, this foto answers the question, if some heathsinks are needed: YES, or you unsolder the smd-components

But Franz, wheres the small signal transistors ? is it the small solder drop like round things ? Maybe these can be repaired too?
Ok, got the fixed +-15V regs today, now i think i have all the parts i need to make this amp i'v dubbed the CC - Carlos Clone.
cant wait to hear it!
just hope i didn't **** up on the rectifiers or anything else i should know..🙄
Carlos: how important is having the snubber close to the power wires?

That's what I meant.
They are called "hybrids".
It's just my vice of calling a chip to any multi-legged device...😀
