Now and then you run in to an experience like that.
Some time ago, taking a few days off, I spent the time in a summerhouse on the Danish westcoast. There was an old radio
in the house, like 40 years old or something. It was a tube radio.
The sound of that radio was so pleasent that I couldn't believe my ears! Later the radio was dumped for a B&O "hifi",
because it was "too old"! What a mistake from the ownerThe sound of the new "hifi" was terrible in comparison. Sad story.
I guess you are right Jan, But you have got to love this 17 year norwegian, for his fresh thinking. Don't you? Replies? This is #47
I think😉
Nonetheless, the GC has its virtues as a nice starting project, in to this DIY thing. A generic Gainclone is not much of an amp IMHO. Implemented in the right way, it can sound pretty good.
(Read: CarlosFM's Snubberized high-cap thing) 🙂
All the best
Steen.
and nasty experiences they are too, when you realize that what you spent so much money, time and effort in isn't really much better than what you went fram in the first place.
But i'm young, i have lots of time to try other amps, maby i'l find one that can best the panasonic after all. 😀
And thanks for the kind words, but after all, this forum, and other forums, are based on people contributing their findings and discussing them as well.

Absolutely! This was THE freshest thinking I read here for a long time, finally someone who doesn't act as a sheep and follow whoever is the current fad. And I was wrong, yes, I didn't expect the turnout. Maybe my early post tickled some people😉 ?

Yes you are right. It is a good starter project, and if it wets your appetite you can move on to building, and eventually designing and building, your very own amp. If that is what you like of course, if you are in construction and metalwork it really doesn't make much difference what your design is because you can make a fantastic project anyway. I never was very good at metalwork and construction, admire those things from people like Peter Daniel. I always was more of a circuit tinkerer.
And in the end, if you did a good job, you will be rewarded with Good Music, of course. 😉

Curious, Jan...
When we are discussing a (better) PSU you ask for proof, you demand an explanation, you like to see measurements.
When someone says that a Panasonic portable boombox sounds better than his LM3886 amp, you believe it and don't ask questions.
Great...

and don't ask questions
Questions? What questions? This is 'the freshest thinking'

Carlos, be fair.
Where did I say I believed him? I said that I enjoyed the fact that he didn't run like the other sheep after the current fad. I DID NOT say I believed him.
After hearing things that are not there, are you now starting to read things that are not there? Do you EVER learn?

You need to cut me some slack here..
"if i could just "send" you the sound"
i belive i read that sentence somewhere here in this forum while doing resertch on your amp.. go figure..

What do you call "old Panasonic portable"?

Hey, I never said this is an advanced circuit, did I?
I even said it is too simple for some to understand.
Anyway, great!!! Your teacher understood the meaning and purpose of the circuit, while the "big heads" around here ar still scratching their heads.😀 😀 😀 😀

And what do you mean???

Janneman: Carlos, this does not say I believe him. Don't you see the irony? He says the Panasonic sounds better then the GC, so people AUTOMATICALLY assume either the GC is broken, or the Pana sounds better than expected (whatever that means. The Pana reads your mind and then decides to sound better??)
Why to exclude the most likely situation, namely, they both sound the way they do and he prefers the Pana?

Sy, i dont rightly know, you consider this to be a hostile tone? it wasn't meant to sound like that.
I do however use strong words when communicating strong meanings. (or ideas, what not.. third language you know..)

no, you didn't, neither did I.
what i said whas that many people doubt it works, as you doubt one can be lucky and come over a panasonic portable with decent sound.

Hi all,
I've been following this thread for a while now, and it just dawned on me, i've got a bigger problem !
My gainclone outperforms my Denon AVR 1803.
I know the 1803 is not high end, but this is starting to freak me out. I've just upgraded my Vifa Carat speakers (1803) with Scan Speak D2905/930000 Tweeters (€220.-). Which make the whole setup sound much better, but still the gainclone does better. Even with that crummy old TEAC cd p 3000 player. But then again, the rebuild and improved Jean Marie Renaud XO II speakers are a perfect match for the gainclone.
I just think i'm going to have to buy a better Denon, perhaps a 3800 series will do !

I don't want to snub anyone. But what's the problem? My first version PlayStation outperforms perhaps any CD player and turntable I have ever heard, at least when it comes to jazz. I couldn't be happier.
