Has anyone built the Scan-Speak Opus?

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

I've been looking for a project, and this one just happens to use the two drivers I have left over from my failed "Response 2s" clone project. Looks like a simple crossover and I'll bet the bass is deep and clean.

My only question is if there is a port tube on the hole at the floor, or is that whole cavern the "tube".

Any advise? It looks like it'd be a blast!

It's a tube I think, you can always contact audiocomponents for the exact specs.

I've heard this speaker in a demo-room (@ DIY-shop) but I can't say anything about the sound. The only thing I can say that's it's not bad 😉.

The tweeter is very nice.

Oh I know...I'm just making sure. =)

I'd hate to spend time/money building them then find out that the wink meant "Boy do these blow a$$"

I'd still like to find some additional pictures somewhere. I'm also waiting for Rolf to respond on if there is a tube there or if it is just a hole in the MDF.

That's what I was thinking. Maybe I'll route out the inside and outside a little so I don't get noise from it.

What material do you think this is? I'd been thinking just 3/4 MDF, but that brace may need to be made out of birch plywood. Those edges look WAY too thin to stay together as MDF.

I'm going to go and start building these tonight....I'll let everyone know how it goes.

I could not get the crossover right and am HORRIBLE at math so it was a lost cause. Nobody seemed to be able to help me.

I'd love to get them so they sound right, but without anyone else making them and helping, it is impossable for me to finish them.

I got an email back from Jan. Here are the pics of his and the description that he gave me...

I used to have these speakers but sold them to a good friend. I have always been content with the speakers. They have a good stereo-stage, and very nice high's (not sharp). Also the bass is quite good. All in all a good allrounder. My current speakers are i.m.o. better in the mids and highs but not by a great distance.

Rolph also sent me the following...

We've used MDF, but plywood will do fine as well. There is a port at the bottom, it should have a lenght of 145mm. The sound is tuned to Jazz-combo's and acoustic music, there it performs best.

So there we have it. I've got the cabinet construction under way and will build the crossovers this weekend. I'm hoping to have them done next week...
