I'll turn it on with a long stick, don't worry 😉
seriously though, what''s wrong with that? seems to make sense according to this diagram:

Seriously, you had better read up on using electricity safely and particularly the colour codes we use in the UK.
Brn = Live
Blu = Neutral
Grn/Yel = Earth.
Older wiring often uses
Red = Live
Black = Neutral
Grn = Earth
Go and find a friendly electrician and ask for some safety guidelines.
Go back to your Physics/Science/CDT teachers and ask them.
Seek help before you injure yourself or someone else.

Blue and Brown is as you would expect. Join the Vio and Grey together and insulate them with some choc block or tape.
Disconnect the power supply boards from the amp boards and connect the tranny and check the output voltages before connecting them to the amp boards.

you worry too much 😉 the wires from the old marantz power input board are blue/brown, I'm sure I would have got them right 😉 besides, it's an alternating current, surely you could hook live/neutral up either way and have it work?
well, i decided to go with the 'suck it and see' approach and it's not killed me or any of my immediate family yet... in fact it seems to be making sweet, sweet music!
thanks to everyone for their help/input, i'll report back when i'm ready to upgrade 😉

can anyone tell this guy how to kill himself. He doesn't believe me.KieranC said:....besides, it's an alternating current, surely you could hook live/neutral up either way and have it work?
I wonder if that is his last post?
Kieran. I stand to be corrected but the only equipment in which you can safely transpose live and return is if it is double earthed i.e as in having a figure of 8 mains lead and no earth.

Yes, I'm posting from the grave, I decided to test the mains lead with my tongue.
How stupid do you think I am?
Thanks Puffin. It's sounding good 🙂
Connecting Live and Neutral the wrong way round will not kill you. In many countries the mains connectors allow for turning them by 180°. There you never know, on which side it is Live or Neutral. As long as your PE is done correctly, have no fear.
However, if you live in the UK, where Live and Neutral have a determined position, you must absolutely stick with it. Take into consideration that there is always the possibility, how unlikely it may seem to you, that someone else opens up your amplifier and relying on his experience touches, where he usually could, but in your amp should not.

Yeah, stick with the correct color. I know it's AC but my last soldering iron definitely gives electric shock when plugged in the wrong way (indonesian plug can be reversed unlike australian ones).

Oh no! 😉
Thanks for all the info, as much as I joke I'm always very careful with electricity, hence all the questions.
I think a pre-amp will be my next project, even with the CD player on minimum volume this is rather loud 😀
I found a 2 input selector switch thingy on ebay for about £3 so I bought it and fitted my old volume pot inline with the output... seems to do the job! apparently the pot works best with a ground connected 😕 😉
next step, internalize it!
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.
