Sacrilege/what problems have I caused myself/what next?

Hi all, I just wanted to update you on this.

In the end I opted for a re-cap on the crossovers (converting them to the AB crossover was too complicated for me), and a new pair of bass drivers - the Monacor SPH-210’s as recommended in this article. A bit of wood filler was needed to make the drivers fit, but no cutting/routing.

I’m over the moon with the results. It’s difficult to compare with the original sound based on memory, but I’d say it’s very very close indeed; it certainly has all the qualities that used to make my hair stand on end when my Dad was using them.

Compared to the “temporary” sound using the Q15 drivers, I now realise the bass, while controlled, was too dominant. It sounded great initially, but longer listening sessions left me weary somehow. They actually sound better, more balanced, back in their intended cabinets, which is what I should have expected really, and the 104’s are beautifully balanced and musical, with a lovely rich bass that is never ending but knows its place in the composition. They force me to stop analysing the sound and just get lost in the music.

Thanks for your thoughts and input everyone 🙂
