I hope it is not the S/H that makes the difference, otherwise implementation of a deglitcher would be another challenge....

Bernard, where stands S/H for?
When i use a deglitcher, i have to add glue logic for that too.
QSerraTico_Tico: will try it this afternoon.

Try taking clock output from pin 3 or pin 5 of IC4 in rfbrw's schematic.

sample / hold
Took clock output from pin 3 and 5, even worse noise. The strange thing is after i put clock back on pin 4 the R channel also has noise. The whole has become unusuable now.
If the right channel is okay, there is nothing you can do to the
circuit as it currently stands that will fix the left channel.

Or this.
The SM5840A seems to accept data in standard format and in this case I2S format coming from SAA7310 is converted. It's from a Philips CD930. The IC partially shown in the upper right corner is the SM5840A.
Datasheet for SM5840A here:

Yes Quirck, it problably will have to be done with that schematic, or at least something like that.
I discussed this circuit earlier, it's universal and the flipflops are only needed when a differential dac setup is used.

This is currently playing R channel only data. It is set for 20 bits.
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Mmm, i have a nice logic analyser. Up to 100Mhz for a few channels (it's old). Where are you located?
Hi Guido.
I live in the north, Drenthe, small town just under the smoke of Emmen. Thanks for kind offer. But if you have to drive a long time don't feel obliged to come along for this project of me, your time is very valuable i guess.
I have to resolder everything again, because it's a mess by now, tried a lot this afternoon, no succes.
Pitty because it had the capacities to sound really good.
Think it over, and will problably go for the universal PCM1704 schematic. and then in 16bit version. More components but that doesn't matter when it works good.

The circuit posted has now been extended to cover the left channel. It works perfectly with the PCM1702. And yes, the nos sound is still rubbish.
Rfbrw, will print your version and have a good look at it. Thanks.
I must admit, the human hearing can be fooling. What sounds very good one night, is sounding less the other...
Which fir filter do you prefer then, 4X, 8X, internal in PCM dac, or separate (SM****) filters? I get sick and tired of the synthetic treble from 7220. Some better is the upsampling feature from CD of my DVD/SACD player.

Quirk, missed you 2nd post, #190. Will have a good look at that one too. Thanks for all the input here guys!
