The other end of the Alcap capacitor is connected isn't it ? Im sure it is, but it's worth checking the obvious.
I'd get a couple of 0.50mH and 1mH low DCR inductors to add in series with the original bass inductor.
I know it's the wrong side of the world, but just to show an example, you can get Jantzen P-core and discs, 0.5mH; 20 AWG; RDC 0.17 for £2.82 from audio-components.co.uk.
If you find adding parallel inductors improves the sound, you could then think about getting the main inductor measured and replaced with an air-core type.

Thanks for all the tips. The speakers definitely aren't damaged as they have always sounded this way. They are are just too bright for me...unfortunately the insurance company gave them to me and I didn't have much of a say in what I got.
That said they do sound good on some things, but the upper mids need a bit of taming.
I'll try the inductor thing next.
My Marantz has tone controls but not mids, and my Nait doesn't have any. And from experience in my music studio I think the cost of a good sounding Eq would be more than just selling these and getting a pair of Dynaudios or something.
Thanks for the help

There are many common issues that sound much worse than a typical equaliser. But regardless, if you can get your hands on one in your listening room for even a short time you can find the settings that work for you. It isn't the equaliser that you need quite as much as the settings, as these can at least be translated into crossover adjustments.
ok. i put in a 1mH 20AWG inductor in series on the woofer and either its placebo effect or i have improved things 🙂
Had a listen to a whole album on a CD that usually sounds a bit harsh and sounded better. I might try installing a low value resistor across the binding posts to cut a tiny bit off the tweeter.
thanks!
