RJM Audio Emerald Phono Stage Help Desk

Hi Richard,

In early January, I was the guy who bought a pair of Emerald boards and asked you if my Sugden phono preamp power supply (with convenient umbilical cord) would work--we agreed it should.

So I'm finally going to build this thing, primarily for MM with a Cinemag SUT. I use a plain vanilla DL-103. What settings would you think would be a good start: 47k input load, 37 dB gain, possibly? I currently use a SofTone Model 4 from Yokohama and 47k and the 5 mV MM switch works fine on that. A friend uses your VSPS, which he likes very much, and is very curious about how the Emerald will sound when I'm finished.

Thanks for supplying us with good value kits!

Interesting emerald phonostage video to Share. I'm quite shocked it sound so good besides being sneakily accurate . { compared with some other} for such little effort.
It took quite long to burn in completely buddy told me is small signal issue. So I made a attenuation to use a radio to help burn in.

No vacuum tubes by the way.

Emerald is truly a must do project.. Fantastic price performance. It's so silly simple but I came to trust this little box to simply do whatever required. Live recording. Acoustics. Disco. Classical.. Oldies..jazz. Everything is doable and enjoyable. I do feel Alot of my friends got put off cause it's too simple and not exotic.

Thanks Richard.. especially the stay at home issue now. I played with it alotttt.. Much appreciate your sharing this project..

You're welcome. Using an attenuation network and a radio is a tried-and-true burn in method. Some people even go to the length of making an inverse RIAA to fully convert the line level signal into a simulated cartridge output.

@kjb Historically OPA637 have not worked especially well in my boards, neither do OPA37s by the way. I can't honestly recall if anyone has tried OPA627s, but op amps are socketed ... and a full set of OPA27s is less than a single OPA627 so not a huge problem if things go pear shaped.

I realized how a good riaa phonostage is very important

I was given a tube riaa phonostage.. . Supposedly is excellent ? But my ears could not tune my turntable cartridge by ear!

Irregardless how "good" it sound... Alot of misinformation.. And thus fatigue.

So quite pleased to strick with the bom as strict as I can .a feat because I'm adhd. Only thing I did is try with a better hookup cable and transformer..

Success! Mine is working, fed by a +/- 17.5 Sugden power supply. No gotchas, so I have to hand it to Richard for designing an easy-to-build circuit board. Sound is good, roughly equivalent to my SofTone 4. I'm using a Denon DL-103 into a pair of Cinemag CM-1254 SUTs, so I'm at the default 40 dB gain and 47.5k ohm input load. I'll experiment with using the Emerald as a MC phonostage and perhaps try out boutique capacitors at C3.
