Yamaha 5000,

Could not find that.

What exactly do you do with a used turntable? I can check the speed and sound quality, replace belts, but is it first time DIY? Or maybe I can find a shop that can do the work for me, not cheap.

These prices seem to place these things not to far in my timeline.

Used turntables...

I think non suspended tables are likely the easiest one to deal with on line because there is less to go out of whack at the hands of UPS.

Suspended ones like the Dual, where the entire plinth can be locked onto the base for delivery are likely 2nd best.

With good suspended tables careful packing becomes a lot more important. Mind you, I think they are the best sounding.. but a broken, otherwise fantastic, turntable is a bad sounding table...

I don't know that belt or direct drive are significantly different, except that -per my observation- direct drives have more complex electronics.

If the table is packed well enough, the tonearm should not be an issue... except that anything with a "damping paddle in a viscous vat of liquid" is not very conducive for shipping.

IMHO, the more High End, the more likely the chances that you will get a good product as audiophiles tend to be more honest. The last thing you want to do is to buy from eBay since there are tons of flippers in there hacking junk with florid words.

The worst thing to do is to buy any used audio from someone who is not used to selling audio... ie: a florist, a knick knack shop, etc..

If you buy from a shop, or some turntable specialist, you might specify a new cartridge and some tuning... they won't be the cheapest but likely the least worry transaction.

In your locale, Japan might be the best source. Just remember they have 100V so you might need a power transformer.

Make sure the object is insured for shipping.

What I meant was: I want the studio masters, that is the point at which I want to get into the music.

Vinyl is a good second choice, that is what I have heard.

So, eons later, reading about the mastering of that album, I found out that that ONE song had left and right swapped. They only found out when they went to master the CD

That is just the point. The final product is what matters to me, never mind what the 'artist intended': think for example Picasso.

If they mixed it wrong, let's have the wrong mix (of course there is a minimum level of quality I would listen to, minimums seem to be increasing daily.

Of course there are the 're-masterings' which makes you wonder if the original was so good why re-master?

BTW: I think Caravanserai is a little bit better than Abraxas.

I had never hear of the first one, until now, even songs from that. Abraxas is a classic, and "Black Magic" was one of my favorite songs. It was written, however by Fleetwood Mac. I searched for a casette tape with that song in the 1980s and never found out the title until much later. At that time I should have asked around.

"Black Magic Woman" is a song written by British musician Peter Green, which first appeared as a single for his band Fleetwood Mac in 1968. = Wikipedia

"A sabor amigos.... Oye Come Va..."

How about Evil Ways, Jingo and one of my favorite all time Santana songs? Treat - from the eponymous Santana album.

BTW, I saw Santana in concert in '75 at the Honolulu International Center.... three hours, two sets of Santana... it was a "contact high" in many

I have the Greatest Hits album, and it is converted from casette tape, however I hear certain shortcomings now, though there is no wow and flutter discernible.
It has the songs Jingo and Evil Ways.

How about Evil Ways, Jingo and one of my favorite all time Santana songs? Treat - from the eponymous Santana album.

BTW, I saw Santana in concert in '75 at the Honolulu International Center.... three hours, two sets of Santana... it was a "contact high" in many ways. 🚬

Oh, while on Santana... check out the Woodstock performance of Soul Sacrifice.... they were riding on an acid on rush... you can tell, they were in a groove with the drums and rhythm... with the guitar literally bursting in light...

I saw the Woodstock video some time ago, it is timeless so is that song White Rabbit

There was also a video of a reunion with band member Marcus Malone, not sure if you have seen it, says a lot. Was he at Woodstock? Marcus, I mean.

Speaking of used, the field opens up considerably: I can get two for free.

there is a Sony direct drive that stopped working (was powering on and working, then the motor stopped turning and light stopped coming on) . I tried to get it repaired, but could not. It is a direct drive unit, and I have asked for picture of it to be sent, maybe it can be fixed. I opened it up myself, but could not make head or tail of it. On the other thread I posted another model, waiting for pictures.

Maybe like this one:

There is a JVC AL-A1 - (read out to me as JVC AL-A1BK) without a belt, offered to me by a relative in Canada, is it worth the shipping, that is the question.

There is an article on restoration: Restoring a JVC-A1 I am willing to give it a try.

I got extremely lucky when I visited my local radio station after realizing they had gone to the dark side..."digital!"...lol
I asked the management if they had analogy gear and their reply was "No! But you can have as many of the LPs in our basement!"
I soon afterward purchased a PLANAR II, snapped the tonearm for a RB220 and TangoSpinner sub platter and 2M-Blue. Like a curse the prices of LPs has since soured and I have to budget my music. This was 4 years ago.

The price of used stuff has gone up.... LPs used to sell for 99 cents at used record stores... good luck with that today.

And the price of vintage equipment from the 70s... the stuff that "looks" good, has skyrocketed as flippers have gotten into the game... even though as the components are beyond their lifecycle, often requiring extensive rebuilding and even when OEM.. well, they just sound "vintage".

But for a generation raised on MP3 and Apple in ear buds even a Superscope receiver with a pair of Radio Shack speakers will sound better!

I got banned from reddit "audiophile" for pointing this out. The "moderator" there is active on ASR and we got into a private "discussion".... turns out he is NO audiophile. I told him to shove it and deleted all of my posts and reddit account.

Anyhow, all of this search through old turntables is suspect. I think $1000 bucks spent on digital will sound better. It takes some moolah to make analog sound good... even in the used market. You can not go cheap on mechanical and very low level analog stuff.

OK 1st T/T system that will blow away any commercial setup up to say $15,000
Turntable - Denon DP-10 - Considered on par or better that the Technics SP10 MkII
Arm - Temaad Warlock 12'' Uni-Pivot arm Kit - *If you can make Lego up, you can make this arm) Considered better than the SME309
Cart - Denon 103 - Have upgraded with Boron cantilever & M/Line stylus) Will beat any cart up to $1500.
Phono stage - AD797 MC Phono - Adjustable gain & capacitance. Kit made up by Sachuu888 on this site.

This system will blow your mind.

Yes some DIY, you need to make a plinth & box for phono plus assemble Temaad Kit arm.

Cheers

This is what I have, or have access to. The Sony PS-333. Everything in that system is called 333. Maybe a repair thread will help.

Just to recap: it was turning fine with the orange light lighting and all that, then it stopped working. No rotation when tone arm was moved. I gave it to an electronics place to repair they could not. Something about replacing the ICs. I wonder now if it was a simple broken contact or maybe even resetting the tone arm. Wish I had it here.

Tell me, is this increase in prices 'speculation' as they call it, or a realization that they are really valuable?
But for a generation raised on MP3 and Apple in ear buds even a Superscope receiver with a pair of Radio Shack speakers will sound better!

They don't make them like the Superscope before, that is such an ....interesting looking design.....

You forgot to mention point source Bluetooth objects. Someone I know has a round dish like thing in his living room and it's so awful.
It cost over $100.

Speculation.

Look at the prices for Superscope and Radio Shack.

Then look at the prices for a Marantz 2020B..

The first were junk (*) the day they were new, the later was an entry level receiver ( I actually owned one of those ).

Just check out the price for a Marantz 2325... a Sansui 8080db, a Pioneer 626, a Sansui 771. NUTS. ( mind you I own a fully restored 2325 and a Sansui G-7500... both with incandescent lights and new output transistors (**) ).

Meanwhile, there are much better sounding components that are not getting love - like NAD monitor series from the 80s ( I own some of those too ).

People are getting them for the LOOKS, not for the sound.

Avoid eBay, btw... too many people asking for more than new prices in components that have been 'worked on by my tech and upgraded with LEDs"... Case in point, I was interested on a Sony VFET integrated amp... it was supposedly given a "clean bill of health by my technician".. so I asked if the diodes had been replaced... Ooops! There are too many hacksters in places like eBay.

My favorite are the ads for Superscope... "built by Marantz".... sure, sure...

(*) See? You're falling for the looks.... never buy anything by its looks!

(**) In the case of the G-7500, those "High Speed" output transistors are harder to get than a Sony VFET. We lucked out and found a low mileage used set. What do you think are the odds that those hacksters, intent on a flip and a quick buck, would spend four months hunting down an OEM set?

Also, what is the parts situation where you live?
My city has more than 4 million people, the last shop selling belts (NOS) has closed, and the last manufacture was more than 15 years ago.

Rubber does age, and that depends a lot on the weather, which is humid and hot for you.

So if i need belts, I have to look on line, and pay 10x price, and take a chance they will be suitable.
Direct drive tables used special chips at times, next to impossible to find spares.

A friend goes to the flea market, made money on flipping cameras, Game Boys and Atari cartridges, he had a difficult time getting a stylus / cartridge from Bombay for a portable Panasonic he found on the street market.

Be prepared for all this, then go ahead if you feel like.

I'm in Southern California.

My turntable is a Linn LP12 and I got one guy who works on it. Parts are readily accessible... that's the beauty of the Linn table.

Other stuff... well, this is the DIY Audio forum... check out the availability of SITs... I got mine from Japan.. via the Internet.

Anything you buy today, be prepared for obsolescence... dishwasher, fridge, even with High End appliances the problem is real. Those are the ones that you want to fix... cheaper stuff is disposable. And then the politicians go ahead and will ban the refrigerant so your perfectly working AC can no longer be maintained...

Hi, Correction to my earlier post. It should read Denon DP80 (not 10) also their D75 is very nearly as good & around half the price at auction.
So the list above will give a marvelous T/T rig for around or just under $2000
Cheers
