I'm very happy with the way they sound. I've owned them for 3+ years and haven't built anything to replace them yet...and that's a long time for me.Conversely, I've found that people have not commented much about the sound of the SEOS-24, but only publish graphs of their performance.
^^ Now *that's* a great find.

A 30" constant-directivity horn. Hmmm.
Why am I thinking you'll be sticking some midrange drivers onto the sides of that?
(BTW, is that a 1" throat horn or a 1.4"?)
I am glad you asked that question. I have been contemplating those EV hr9040s. I am currently running the EV hp640, with the dh1a. Thought about the 2447 with appropriate horn or even 2446 with BE diaphragm. But now that DJK recommends a differnt horn my wheels are turning. Here is the horn through a JBLparts supplier - around $140.00

My question to DJK is if I build a correct throat adapter for Altec 288 do you think the JBL horn will out perform my HR9040 with the Altec? 🙄

It's a 1.5" throat.
Also...interestin idea for a synergy type horn.

The one shown looks like a 1" version (thread-on type), also available in a 1.5" throat, either injection molded (less cost), or fiberglass (bigger bolt circle, higher cost).
"But now that DJK recommends a differnt horn my wheels are turning."
It's a non-standard 1.5" bolt circle, and the minimum JBL uses it is 630hz.
I still love the EV HP640 and HR90, but the sound of the JBL is in a different league.

The EV is a top choice for the 288, an adaptor plate would beed to be made to use the 288 on the JBL horn.
I haven't heard the HR9040 next to the 2384, but next to the smaller HR90 there is a non-subtle difference in the sound (beyond the Be driver).
I can't think of how to measure the differences I am hearing.
I have a similar pair of the JBL 60° x 40° horns for the 1.5" drivers, I have yet to really play with them at this point.

I have the HP940 too and the DH1A, the HR9040 with the Altec 288 is one of the best I've heard -on another level beyoud the HP horn- hard to fault but (HUGE HORNS lol) still will need a tweeter for some people. I think the HR6040 might be better in my room (only 14' wide) but haven't been able to find them. The little Faital HF144 is also a great medium format driver that sounds excellent in the big horns, the Altec just sounds more real. The JBL 2446 will have more output in the high treble but I feel the DH1A is better in the midrange. The Altec 288/291 is better and so is the Faital unless you really want the large format - a Be diaphragm in the 2446 might be the ticket but the 2435 already has one. I've had TAD drivers but only used them in round tractrix - although they were WOW they just give you too much of a good thing in those horns. In a big radial they probably will be better.
DJK knows his stuff and I imagine his JBL combo is just as he says 🙂

Thanks - That is very interesting. would you like to part with the 60 degree version? Those might be what I want. 🙂 Do you have a part number for them ?

I am going to make a 90° mouth extender out of resin-coated 703 fiberglass to get rid of the waist-banding bump on the low end.
This will also make it deeper to match the depth of my mids without needing DSP.

The shape of the JBL 2384 is similar to the QSC PL-000446GP/PRV clone.
I would imagine their directivity performance to be similar.

It is twice the size so it is quit a bit different.

Thanks, I thought about the 703.. great idea, I should try that on my 2386's 🙂

They are quite dissimilar.
The inside corners of the JBL have a large radius, the sidewalls are not flat, and the dispersion is asymmetrical.
I have a pair of the PRV, they are great $10 value 1" horn.
