Doug, he now has CCS boards. I like yours better than mine (bigger pads and holes), but mine work, so bf is now a happy dude.

Yes it can, but that is what the test and development cycle is about. Tune the circuit under test to maximize performance and guarantee the circuit is stable. Any high performance analog circuit can be unstable if not thoroughly tested and compensated during development.
In the spirit of DIY I have uploaded the board files for both versions of the battery bias CCS and the Self bias CCS to the download section of my web page. Each Zip file contains the board file and BOM. There are also a couple of assembly guides on how to assemble the boards.
The files are for ExpressPCB. Download and install the latest version of ExpressPCB. Then you can open the board file. When the board file is loaded you can order boards from ExpressPCB via the web. (Layout\Compute board cost\...) The boards are formated for their mini board service. The mini board service gets you 3 2.5 x 3.8" boards for $59.00. The CCS boards fit 4 to a mini board so for your $59.00 you get 12 CCS boards.
ExpressPCB fabs nice boards and seems to be available pretty much world wide.
Fast too! At least in the US, the board turn is 3 days. I can place an order Sunday night and have boards waiting for me on Wednesday when I get home from work.

I'm going to go ahead and order some TIp50's and what not's from Farnell this week. If that fails to produce the goods then I will consider coming in on a group buy.
Can CCS's be protected with Zeners. Will this have any effect on their overall performance ???

I'll be ordering some of these depletion mode mosfets soon so let me know!
Hope the Tip500 works out - Gary P uses zener protection accross the Mosfets in his CCS, so I presume it's fine with bipolars!

Hi all,
I was getting very frustrated at my lack of success with cracking this whole CCS issue.I was placing an order for those TIP50's when I though even they might be a bit marginal. So I went to my scrap pile and pulled some vertical deflection transistors with 900V ratings and 5A capability. I though this should certainly cope - but obviously I would need a beefier second transistor as well. I decided to substitute a darlington pair. I lashed up four last night and plugged them in. I think this might be known as a ring of three.
Hey presto they work. The amp sounds very good and over half a dozen power ups have not produced the magic smoke. Job done. In this application, with heavy bypassing I don't imagine that the relatively poorer quality of the CCS will be having to bad an effect - but I may look to upgrade in the future.
4 months of frustration is over. John we can now arrange another meet up once they have proved themselves over a few weeks.

If a preamp with 417A already choke loaded and have a cathode resistor there, the circuit has no buffer with a output coupling. Will it be possible replace the cathode resistor with CCS?
