RESULTS!

finaly my rolls of foil came in, i stil, needed to fix one mid bass panel because i screwed up and ran out of foil 🙁. so almost 2 weeks later the foil arived.

i fixed them yesterday measure the resistance before tagging all the cloth down again 🙂 8 ohm , so thats ok.

today some tests.

i start out with a test to show the resonance of the bass panels, because there was some discussion about using foil instead of wire and glue. because the resonance frequency could go up. at least thats what i thought when i first tried this methode.

Heres a measurement from the bass panels up close left and right panel.

both are at 40 Hz as i can recall its where it supposed to be as well. The resonance shows up as a hump on the bottom where after this hump it falls off steeply.

i tried measuring the Mid/bass panels but this is kind of hard, id did gave me some insight of what they wanted to achieve. they have 3 resonances 2 of them being in the low region one on 70Hz on on 50Hz and the small one i did not measure. but this with the resonance of the bass panel of 40hz gives a nice boost from 40 to aroun 90-100hz where it still rolls off a little bit in room compared to close measurement.

Second image is a raw frequency response of both complete Tymphani's in room (with to much reverb as you can see) at 1 meter distance. as comparison i first measured a dynaudio audiance 42 to know if im in the ballpark with SPL, Dynaudios are 86dB at 2.83v my measurement of the tymps are 0.5 to 1 dB lower then that. so around 85 and 85.5 wich is exactly withing 0.5 db the spl they should have.

Third image a smoothed response, smoothing strength is what Holmimpulse selects as standard did not made any changes there.
this response let us see a few things relaly clearly. first of all the phase rsponse you can see it uses 6db oct filters because i never see the phase go to 180 back to 0 degree. it also lets us see because there are 3 panels you are going to be bussy for a prette long time to tune this system for your room. at 500 hz you see a wrinkle in the phase response, you can tune this by changing the the panels with there hinges moving one panell more off axis or on axis or making the corner bigger all changes the phase response. best would be ripping of all hinges and just put them side by side.(my guess).

i played with it a little bit, and this is what i got in like 1 hour, if you relaly would take a half a day taking measurements and fine tune i bet you can get beter results.

LISTENING

well i listen to serveral albums, some really sound well, some with allot of low end dont. my room is not that huge and i can't sit far enough from the speakers. so my stereo image is way to big wich will caus gaps in the middle of the soundstage, also one speaker is close to a side wall and the other is free this screws up the image. bass on some tracks is overwelming my listening position is (not good) close to the rear wall. there i end up with way to much bass. fun and nice for some albums, but albums with heavy bass it becomes so overwelming i blurs my soundstage and detail. this is a comon problem i had in this room, with other dipole speakers as well. moving my couch forward would solve the problem , but that brings me even closer to the maggies wich makes the soundtage even wider and prone to being just 2 seperate speaker that dont work together to present me music.

Power handling
Well i use a pioneer ref amp capable of 2 x 150 watt at 4 ohm. the amount of volume you can produce with that is far more then i would listen to, even with room shaking bass.

Details
Well the hinges are some weird invention i reckon remove them and give all panels feet. serveral reasons to do so.

first the rattle wich is the most dumb thing i ever seen on such speaker. adding stuff that ratles with bass. ....
second when folding to a nice little package of 3 they weigh a ton, pretty hard to move them around.

third
well without the feet you are limited with the angels of your panel setup, because they are prone to tipping over when you approuch lower angels. and i can assure you if they do ever fall there gone! i once (im so stupid) had 2 panels of smga without wire and wanted to clean them up when i wanted to put one of them on the floor, when i was like 10 cm above the carpet it slipped out of my hands, its not gone fall hard at all because of the air. but this air blew up my foil instead ..... and created a nice huge split in the mylar.....

conclussion , i think it was a nice experiment to do, i did not want to keep them because of my girlfrend(and me) finding them a bit to large. i though i listen to them untill there sold. but i dont feel sorry to let them go as long as i live in the apartment so i dont have to feel sorry 🙂. this room is not doing any justice to the sound they may produce. i cant sit in a proper triangle with them because of the room and the HUGE size of the speakers.

The bass to much for my taste at listening spot. i do must say what a fatacstic designs magnepan made and the nice quality of the old days and verry nice stuff they made0(make). but its not for everyone to have 2 enormes dressing screens huge and black or nasty 70's smoked white/yellowish. maybe if ur house is huge to i might be a reaklly nice looking pair of speakers

some last pics in messy room 🙂

some pictures of messy living room 🙂 and the finished set

as you can see the couch is pretty close to the speakers, also i cant get a picture with the complete set on it from the front , because of the wall 🙂
