Reference DAC Module - Discrete R-2R Sign Magnitude 24 bit 384 KHz

Hi Soeren!

'Cause I feel responsible for the latest NOS-********;-)-I have to say- sorry for that!
I have understood now, that experimenting with non oversampling-philosophy
demands other board designs.

In no way I intended to devalue your engineering expertise! How could I- as digital audio is really not my special field. I was fascinated of your solution with the DAM from the very beginning and will follow your work constantly.

Just to me, out of listening experience, both topologies have their existential right and have captured my interest.

Moreover I also followed the thread here for a long time- so I can attest you much patience and the goodwill to listen to the customers- the board-incarnations from rev.1 to rev3 show that very well;-)
So- you ARE a nice man!

But there is no better evidence for my enthusiasm for the DAM 1021
than telling you, that I have purchased allready 3 boards. I own a rev.1 and two rev.3's and didn't even listen to newest rev.3.

But I will do next week when the setup is ready- have done a lot of efforts to make it perform as good as possible (so I think;-))...and be assured, I won't choose the newNOS-filter;-)- after testing all available filter-designs, my favorite with the DAM is F5 of the offered firmware-filter-banks.

So- don't worry and keep on the fantastic work!

Greetingz, Robert

Thanks everybody for the nice words and support, I appreciate it and it warms my heart.

As often said in the industry, 10% of the customers create 90% of the support load. I can live with those 10% of the customers go somewhere else....
Hi Soeren, thank you for clarification I'm the previous posts. At least we've got the basic idea on why the choices were made. Definitely there would be some people doing the things, marked as don't do it at your kitchen on your own. But why not experience is born like this.

Indeed in the recent years the thread has great we a lot and building a FAQ might be an enormous task. I know it is easier to suggest, but may be some readers could help creating the FAQ even based on the thread, not the requests coming in, may be it should be incorporated as part of hifi duino page, which is quite nice.

I think there is no need to be one man running this project. We have enough admirers and users in this thread who could help.

Might be a good idea to raise a revised thread with %

1.Built in FAQ
2.Link to this thread as historical
3.Links to other sub threads that would emerge later on
4. Another thread with questions where poles can read current questions and raise theirs if they have not been raised already.

Such threads could be moderated by people from the forum

It is a community project in a way, so why don't use the communities helping hand)

And I apologize for not offering my help here, but I believe some experts in the thread might be eager to help

As you have your design and production work to do, so might be better of you focused on the areas you prefer rather than stretching yourself across

The rule of psychology is. If you are doing the training 95% of people will follow the trainer. And the rest 5% D1 old keep challenging him. So the trainer should convince those 5%, and the rest would follow them.

But we are not on the training, so no need to convince any one

Thank you for your great design.

I am going to listen to the dac now 🙂

Just enjoy the music!

Just asked someone else who's bought stuff from them and their HQ is actually in HK 😕 maybe people buy locally from them?

Since we (people in HK) can't access that site, we have no idea where to buy even if there is a physical store nearby, and I am not sure it is run by a Hong Kong company or just the name let people think it is based in Hong Kong. You know, you can register a domain name like "diyinjapan.com" but doesn't need to have the office registered in Japan for example.

The parcel definitely came from a HK address. The problem is whether it's a warehouse or something or an actual storefront.

Sorry point taken 😀

Anyways, bump on my previous question. Do need a transformer with at least 3 x 8VA secondaries or a couple of single secondary ones to use with the DiYinHK supplies; did you guys get something off the shelf or order something custom-made?

Try Audio Grade transformers from:
Toroidal transformers AUDIO GRADE - Shop Toroidy.pl

They make any specs you need and send wherever you want. I got some trafos from them.

When it comes to transformers one needs to realize there is nothing special about a toroid.

They are easy to package into small cases but there is nothing to recommend them for sonic reasons.

No question, from people whose opinions I trust the company nige2000 recommends makes an excellent toroid. Most likely the best.

But consider the fact that the toroid offers no protection whatsoever from AC line junk.

If I lived in the UK or Europe these are the transformers I would use:
1 Phase Transformers – Product Categories – JMS Online

I suspect they are superior to the HAMMOND split bobbins I use here. Rod Coleman, an audio power supply genius, recommends split bobbins in general and this company's product specifically. I worry the freight would cost more than their reasonable prices for the transformers themselves to get them here.

The only reason I can see for the toroid is if you have no choice but to place the transformer in the same box as your circuit, but even then one must be aware that the things radiate vertically above and below the core so what you put below or on top is getting buzzed.

Better off with the split bobbin mounted remotely in my unhumble opinion.

I think a property to consider if one mounts the transformer in the same case, i.e. close to the DA is the field it radiates. Here it is said to be the R-core that has the smallest. If the R-core beats the toroid on overtones I don't know. I try to place my high voltage AC -> low voltage DC conversion far away from sensitive electronics.

Actually Audio Grade toroids from toroidy.pl have electrostatic shield between primary and secondary windings.

If one want to reduce radiation, could try Audio Grade V2 which are additionally encapsulated in metal case.

As far as reudcing AC line junk I got spectacular results with Finemet Beads.
