Hello all,
I have been enjoying my SEE since power up last march however, I am getting the DIY bug again and this time I think I want to build some speakers for my SSE. I am running my SSE with the big edcor OPTs and EH KT88s. I brought the amp over to a friends house the other day and listened to it on a pair of vintage Klipsch Chorus speakers (101db sensitivity) and WOW! The sound was amazing with more volume then we could handle. The SSE in UL mode using SS rectification had no issue moving the big 15 inch woofers. Even in triode with tube rectification the sound was amazing and crazy loud.
Don't get me wrong my amp sounds great on my paradigm monitor 7's but this was something else.
So long story short is anyone aware of a set of high efficiency DIY speaker plans? I am looking for something 98db+
Thanks in advance!
I have attached a pic of my completed build in case anyone was interested...

It's only 92db.......
What are your size constraints?
What is your budget?
Can you build cabinets?

Welcome to the world of high efficiency designs. I take it that you want to essentially duplicate that sound you heard on those Klipschs...
Size really does matter in this instance. Don't be fooled into believing some exotic FullRange rear loaded horns will duplicate this "type" of sound that you are seeking. A simple 15" semi-pro driver with a big big horn to top it off.
A rather large enclosure of your very own design will do just fine. I would start with something the likes of an Eminence Delta 15A, model it for a large ported alignment, match up a compression driver with it, bolt up a horn at minimum 8"H by 15" W....larger will be even better.
A set like this will be large, count on it ... Make space for them, dedicate the space, you will not be disappointed!
Modeling that Eminence driver on WinISD beta I got an enclosure of 666 Liters of volume. This is common, trying to pick up that last bit of low-end. In this instance F3 was below 30 Hz.

I'm currently using my SSE with a set of Two Pi loudspeakers and am really enjoying them, but have also started a build of Four Pis. The Four Pis use 15 inch woofers for the bottom end, and compression drivers for the top. You can purchase kits that include everything but the cabinet for $400 per speaker from Pi Speakers - unmatched quality and state-of-the-art performance, or you can get the plans from the designer (for free!) and source the parts yourself.
There are similar designs available at Home page DIY Sound Group. Some of those have flat packs available for the cabinet.

4Pis have been my speakers for more than 6 years and used with the SSE for about 4. Excellent combination.
Until I built the 4Pis I played around with just about every Altec, JBL and Klipsch combination; speaker of the month type thing.
The crossovers are designed by measurement and ear as well as the new H290C horn.

I would like to keep it under 500$, shooting for 98+db efficiency physical size is of minimal concern. The Pi line is absolutely of interest given specs and cost. Not sure if designing something from scratch would be best for my first diy speakers.
You should check out the econowave thread - Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker - AudioKarma.org Home Audio Stereo Discussion Forums

The Pi speakers would be a good choice.
If you had the budget for them, a pair of Altec 19's would rock the casbah!😀
I came up with right around $600 each whipping up a Three-way design solely out of PE , 15", 2" compression driver, big 17 1/2" by 11.42" horn, small horn super-tweeter, L-pads & X-over........seems you total budget is rather low, all things considered.
Have you pondered the Eminence 12 LTA, a fullrange efficient (97.7 DB@ 1W1M) big driver. Inexpensive at less than $100 a pop. Modeling a BR alignment, I get an F3 at about 31.5 Hz. in about 300 Liters worth sized enclosure. It would be a very simple weekend job to build.

Found a pair of Klipsch Chorus IIs on craiglist, picking them up tomorrow. Will report back.... Have a feeling I will be pleased
Nice choice. I use my SSE with a pair of Heresys that rebuilt. New crossovers and Crites tweeter diaphragms were nice improvements.
The vintage Klipsch speakers tend to be quite tube-friendly thanks to their high efficiency. I have a pair of KLF10s that work great with both the SSE and TSE.

Klipsch (Heresy and KLF10) are very nice sounding devices, sound comes out like "easy" and powerful at the same time.
I have these : Eikona drivers
Jordan loudspeaker drive units
And am on the way to build these : Cornu

Another vote for Klipsch... My KG4's with Crites mods sound great with any tube amp I hook up to them....
Hello everyone,
Taking advantage of this thread I also would help for a solution to my SSE listening.
I have a pair of cabinet with about 40 liters already mounted and one pair of Faital PRO 8FE200 (95 dB sensitivity). I plan on using the tweeter Fostex FT17H (98,5 dB sensitivity).
This would be a good combination? If yes, what is the better capacitance value to equalize the sensitivity of the drives?
Thanks
Antonio
