Recommend a DIY Speaker Kit - No pre-made cabinets, SEAS?

I have noticed that most of these cabinets are built by just gluing them together. Normally I would construct the main cabinet structure by dowelling the joints, or biscuit jointing. Is there any reason why this isn't done when building speaker cabinets? I am assuming it's perhaps just to keep costs down as biscuit jointers aren't cheap, but surely there aren't any reasons why doweling or biscuiting the joints would affect the performance of the speaker?

I tend to dowel joint my cabinets as they are a super strong way of connecting, and when done accurately, makes glueing up the cabinet so much easier as it's all aligned accurately and no slipping and sliding on wet glue.
What material are you using?
If its MDF.. you're going to have issues w dowels and biscuits.
If its wood... then your dowels and biscuits work. I think this is also true of plywood.

If you go with a synthetic like Richlite or Panzerholtz (wood / resin , paper / resin , or similar) you will want to check to see what is recommended. Richlite says biscuits and epoxy. Keep in mind... going w a densified lumber or composite resin material will get expensive. ( Just tossing it out there even though you didn't specify a budget or material preference.)

While you don't want to go active.. you may want to consider a Full Range driver. SEAS exotics has one and they even provide some plans for their 8" full range. There's a decent thread here on someone who built the tower and then rebuilt the cabinet a bit.

I know you're in the UK, but here in the US Madisound has some SEAS kits along w other kits for SBAccoutsics and other drivers.
Troels has some cool designs.

I know you said you didn't want to go active... but the SEAS KingRoy (I think that's the name) is a pretty cool 3 way design and you could modify it by increasing the box size and adding in 2 SEAS PRs in each speaker. I think you can find some posts on it here too.

My next set of speakers will be a pair of Linkwitz LXMini kits when I've saved the cash.
Looked at them. Now there's a bloke in Germany that sells more of a finished kit. Here in the US Madisound sells a kit where you can then buy PVC pipes from your local hardware store to build them. If you reuse your existing MiniDSP box(s) and don't build the bass kits... its not that bad of a price.
If you just need the drivers and extra wood bits... Its $600USD since you have the one MiniDSP box. If you want to add the subwoofers its going to be one MiniDSP per speaker. (But you have that already covered.) There are some YT videos on the construction. Note that there is a license fee that goes back to Linkwitz's widow not sure if that's included or extra. (Its on my list. too. 🙂 )

an option, for those who don't want to buy a biscuit cutter joiner-

There are a lot of options...
I mean if you want to find kits w/o boxes so you can build your own... you may want to consider OB speakers.
And that's a whole nother can of worms..
(Design choices. )

@ChrisABC I think TL is an option... still you could use biscuits if you wanted. 🙂

I think 1/2 the fun is planning what to build.

I'm currently using Focal Aria K2 936 floorstanders
Hello, This speaker is a high end speaker. I know them well and SEAS kits. To have something which plays in the same league you should go to a three ways.
Honestly go to the new excel paper driver with the new motor. For example at least this one
CNO GRANDE
The new paper drivers sound very good, as neutral, more vivid sound to my ears than the magnesium drivers.
Unless you want a two ways ...

I'm looking to build myself a good set of speakers to replace my Focal floorstanders.

A member recently introduced me to SEAS kits and their drivers do seem impressive. Has anyone built any of their speaker kits or could anyone recommend one?

I am interested in the Delling, Thor, Acuity and Aphel from the quick read I have had....any thoughts?

Hello,
As you are aware, you have received a lot of excellent suggestions. Being able to build your own cabinets is a big plus, and it makes the rest rather easy. The hard part is deciding what to build. I have built a few speakers in my time. Choosing what to build was always the hardest part.
You have shown interest in Seas kits, noted in the quote. My speakers use Seas Excel drivers and I really like them. With that in mind I would recommend one of Troels Gravesen's CNO series. You build the cabinet. You order the goods from Janzen and everything comes with it. You just then install it in the cabinet.

Troels Gravesen. Yes, of course, very nice site. As the saying goes - something for everyone. Admirations. But decisions made in haste or on emotions don't usually turn out as planned. Sometimes a solution is just right in front of us, especially when it comes to comparable prices. Smonks, man... you live in the UK - /God has touched you/. Would you just look at that original - UK made jewellery: B&W-804-D3 /note - second hand/.
As an example only:

Amazing speakers!
Well, in the end - congratulations Smonks , you made the right decision🙂🙂!! I’m kidding, of course. But... why not, would be a great solution👍.
I hope my explanation has been clear and helpful, rather than confusing.
