You mean after 2001?
Pirate copies, or under license?
Greetings,
IJ.
for a while yes. And as owner of 93-96 BB Japan 63K's, I couldnt care less.
Just a hint: Pick 2 bad performer , from year 94, and 04 , send them to such company where they burn away the plastic and you get a high quality photograph for less than 100 usd per piece.

Yet another good reason not to feed the sharks...
It seems only safe way to buy is to pick up old equipment and remove the chips yourself....

Yes ,The so-called new product basically is REMARK ,demolishes from the old equipment only then has the guarantee!
Has a look at on old equipment's PCM63P-K2
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.
PCM63P-K2 undergoes the choice pair use
several ways to go forward
You might well be wrong with this. Have you ever LISTENED to a genuine PCM63P-K2, KY or Y ?
I remember that at least Finney, Spencer, Manfred and me agreed, that the grades of the PCM63 has strongly to do with the sound. To be fair, I also want to mention here that Herb, Bernhard and George has different opinion.
However, here is a quote from a new thread, devoted to PCM63P-K2 (as recently reported by beauty_devine in http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?postid=1653103#post1653103 )
“Recently I got a pair of K2 that sounds and measures surprisingly better than all the K pairs I have from different manufacturing countries.”
So we are not yet done with this topic, but - how shell we go forward?
The chips here are doubtless genuine BB, unlike the China products from 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, which - being fake (probably) - SOMETIME they still sounds excellent (...). Herb has such a "Y" chip, I have 2 of them (matched pair). OK, we all agree, this was NOT the best way to go: As much as I remember, most other 2002, 2003, 2004 chips went back to Juang (A’AF)…
But, hdmi Chips (old genuine BB) are not A'AFs chips (2001-2004, whatever they are).
I can see 2 good ways:
1. To buy indeed from people like the above quoted member hdmi, who has the legitimate interest to sale and make money of course - assuming that he knows exactly which pro-audio gear has the genuine chips inside (and it seems that he knows this quite well!).
or:
2.
Do-It-Yourself, the best way of course.
BUT: Which old Pro-Audio gear has the desired chips????
I reported once that each "Yamaha DA8X" has 8x(!) PCM63P-KY inside. Since then, not one member here ever reported IN PUBLIC about any other device which has the chips, at least not with the exact name/brand!
People are seemingly afraid that prices will go up on eBay.

DABK9001
2 corrections concerning the above post:
Paul (spzzzzkt) indeed informed the forum once about the possibility to find "PCM63P-K2" in SONY's DABK9001. For example in:
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?postid=1654130#post1654130
Earlier, there have also been a discussion about SONY's recording-desk which might have used "K2" , but was found to have PCM1702 inside.
Meanwhile there are some info about Yamaha Pro-Audio Gear which have the “Y”s inside. I’ll try to clear this out, hopefully soon...
Greetings.

What can you say? Is it real or fake PCM63?
Hi And$er,
Do you mean the above "K2" and "Y" chips from hdmi? They look very very real!
Sorry, I don't understand why the foto of my chip doesn't shown.

Was it the Y or the KY ?
Have you heard the difference between the Y and the KY ?

Y, Ky
Erik,
what meant is - the a selection grades of the BB pcm63 chip. See previous posts on this thread (try also the thread Pcm63p-y? - you shell be able to find it when searching).
In short: the pcm63 has the selection grades: p,j,k,k2,ky,y. I (and many other here) can register a big difference in sound quality: "KY" is fantastic chip, "Y" in my favorite. Both are miles better then any "K".
"K" was at the time the best pcm63 ever been used in consumer CD-Players & DACs. Many of us didn't know about the "KY" and "Y" which have been used in Pro-Audio gears (at least by Yamaha). Sony used a selection grade called "K2" - which is also MUCH better then any "K".
Greetings,
IJ.

actually I knowing a little about IJ's profession, I'd be inclined to trust his listening impressions more that any number of posts of spectrum analyzer screen shots.
I must say that I hear a difference between the grades too... And it is not subtle... But then I hear difference between different production lots of K2 chips.
Listening was done either on my EAD DSP7000 Mk3 (quite pronounced) or Spencer's D1V3 (not that pronounced). And I have at least 3 witnesses.
This post is not supposed to start the flame war again, just my personal experience with more than 20 pairs of Ks, K2s, KYs and Y grades and a pair of fake Ys.

Best regards
