quality of new threads going downhill

Is the quality really going downhill? Over what time span? You and I both joined at the same time in 2004. Go back and look at threads from 2004 in the sections you visited then. Are they much different? From the looks of the titles, not much. Or go back 10 years - again the thread titles seem very similar to what we now have. As to determining the "quality" of those threads, that's going to be a huge task and not one that I would want to undertake.

10 or 14 years ago what was your knowledge level compared to the normal discussions on diyAudio? Has your knowledge improved while the forum has remained at the same level? If so, could that be influencing how you feel about new threads?

By the content. Downhill for me means when there is less and less valuable content. When there is less and less to learn.

Exactly.

I think it would be useful to continue to treat DIY electronics learning here like the HAM (amateur radio) community tried to do - with an 'Elmer' tradition of experienced people helping out beginners.
I've appreciated the time and effort that experts here have taken to answer my 'stupid questions' - and it is still continuing. 🙂

While you may find new threads amusing and hilarious, i find that to be downhill trend.

Whoa, if that's your definition, then I think you are even more off than my 1st response. Just look at speakers for Pete's sake. In 2004 it was 1 subforum, and if you wanted to discuss multiway speakers with complex crossovers you were shunned.

The noise is going up for sure, but so much MORE audio is being discussed that there's no comparison.

never pick a bun fight with someone holding a frozen haggis

You do know this thread is in the lounge?

Yes, Scott. I do know this thread is in the Lounge. It should be in the Forum Problems section, but never mind..........some thoughts:-

I have always stayed away from social media, I find the very idea of Twitter (and the rest) to be one of mortifying terror. So, as I have an interest in music and sound - I tried diyAudio. Most of it has been very good, some of it has been really awful and intrusive. I have helped others when and where I can, and stood up for myself when I felt I had to. Never pick a bun fight with someone holding a frozen haggis.

But overall it has been a good experience - except for something that really does bother me, and should be of concern to everyone. I have said previously that my interests are with what resides as common intellectual property within the public realm. What I do with what I learn and assimilate from the public realm becomes my own private intellectual property - that is until I talk about it online in a public forum, and if I do that, it is no longer mine. Someone can come along, read what I say, patent it, and even sue me for using it. Plenty of sharks out there.

And it is this that makes me have misgivings about being here on diyAudio. It is the Lounge Area that causes the most (entrenched) conflicts of invested interests. Either get rid of it altogether, or try to manage it more effectively with a more stringent code of conduct. Sorry to be so blunt.

Oh, and by the way folks, it was me who was writing about the intricacies of prostate cancer - OK?

You continue to be wrong on this, posting your ideas makes them a public disclosure. This is done all the time in industry. If you want to be sure explicitly state that you are placing your idea into the public domain. You can't do the opposite, i.e. post your ideas and ask everyone what they think but retain ownership.

BTW, just for the record I found your comments about how some might enjoy the holiday season as offensive as you find some of what goes down here.

Nope, it is you who is wrong about my understanding of what constitutes intellectual property. I have a choice in what I choose to disseminate publicly - otherwise known as 'generosity of spirit'. Come on, I do it all the time, but there are certain things that I know about, that I don't and won't talk about. My concern is the lack of discrimination of others in being able to discern this distinction.

Again, I fail to see why it should be removed.

You see it as a distraction whereas I see it as a diversion when I've saturated on Audio. I find it interesting to occasionally look in on what others have on their workbench and, dare I say, what they might have bought today.

The point is, and as unAustralian as it sounds, I despise cricket. It bores the cr@p out of me, but rather than insisting that it should be banned from TV, you know what I do? Switch channels.
