Quad ESL63 Restoration - dustcover frame

Finally finished! I plan on cutting some white marble effect corian for the tops. The wood is soft and the stain deep so I won't bother with them. Recovering from a severe case of vestibular neuritis or vertigo so won't be using power tools for a few days!
I'm not sure if I appreciate the 8.2uf bypass caps as the treble is slightly hotter than I would want.
The TL subs used as stands aren't being used but could be with minidsp.
Hope it inspires someone to tackle theirs.

Thanks. I don't recall seeing that site! They do have some good stuff. I did see the diamond mesh material at a local cloth store but unsure of its acoustic effect and ability to keep dust out.

I have a slight imbalance between the 2 speakers. One is about 4db down on the other. Dreading having to open them up again.

4 dB is a lot. that could be a power supply. Here's a quick(ish) trick: Swap the bases. You have to take the bottom plate off, unsolder three wires, and remove 8 nuts and the the base comes right off. IF you swap the bases and the problem moves with the base, then give the high voltage supply the stink-eye. If it doesn't move with the base, give your panels the stink-eye. You don't have to take apart the panels or top half at all for this test. you don't even need to disturb the grille cloth.

Hi Sheldon, Thanks. I was planning on measuring the HV supply with my HV probe. I'm a bit wary of doing it as I fried a multi-meter the last time I used it on the Kings. Where would you place the earth lead?
Do you unsolder at the delay line boards or the transformer. I unsoldered at the transformer the last time.

With regards to the ESL and sub set up, I wonder if you can please try a quick and easy experiment? Should just take two minutes.

Play just one side with a track with good bass nice and loud, with two adults holding the Quad.

Listen with the Quad on the sub-woofer versus lifted slowly vertically up about 5mm then 200mm and not touching the sub - you will need to sit on books to match the heights.

What do you hear?

That might be difficult as I don't have that much manpower at hand. I have thought of placing the quads on some vibration absorbent material though.
There is a big improvement when I used the minidsp and crossed over at 150hz or so. The panels sound much more detailed apart from some HF glare which is probably the minidsp. I'm thinking of building an ESP P09 2 way electronic crossover. Currently playing them full range with the subs at 150Hz but a 6db/octave cut off. Its a very subtle increase in bass but enough for a small room.

Glare is nasty. Once the brain gets sensitized to it gets even more annoying. It is fixable:

1. Have you get a different source for feeding the Quads alone to see if it goes with the minidsp out of the equation?
2.Can you measure the frequency response and check for any anomalies?
3. Can you listen and use an equalizer to find the frequency band causing the issue and let us know?

I clamp my ground lead to one of the middle brackets that hold the base plate on. Those two middle brackets are screwed tot he metal box that the rectifier board is attached and grounded to. Seems to work well and is easy to access.

In terms of the easy way to remove the bases, here's a diagram for the 988, the 63's are the same, except the location of the hv lead is different.

Hi Sheldon,
I checked the EHT board to see why one speaker was softer than the other. Couldn't get good readings but the softer one had 3.4kV and the louder 3.7Kv. These boards are marked M12525-1. I don't see them in the Quad service manual.
I will swap them over later today. Any advice on the board as I plan to rebuild them.
I had to use the EHT probe to measure the 690/460v and it looks good although my probe probably isn't accurate (750/540vAC)
The EHT boards seem like early versions but the speakers look like later versions from what I see on the net.
