An option is to make a tricolumn Voigt pipe!
Sounds good and are really easy to build.
PVC is not toxic (the polymer) the main problem is all that other stuff added to the formulation, flame retardants dyes, fillers and what have you. These other compunds may or may not be "toxic".

This is my 2" PVC quarter wave TLs project. The sound is amazing and bass is comparable to my Floor-stand speaker! 😀
The most tricky point in this project is to determine the driver offset. I tried various offset ratio and found that between 1/5 to 1/3 (may be @ 1/4) are most optimum in sound.
However, until now there are no clear direction on determine the optimum offset ratio and I still need further studies 😕

Some day I'll show you mine - big tubes and 6" woofer
Though the woofer is placed at the end and it shows all the anomalies that Greg B exposed- the terminus(-es) are very near the woofer...
but all the house rattles 😱😉

OK, then use MDF and Gorilla glue. It all depends on where you live. Everything is known to cause cancer in California.
