Purpose of speaker spikes?

a hasty measurement...
the sidewall vibration doesn't differ very much, but it is not equal as well
red line with spikes, green without

crazyhub,

have you some scientific references that support your statements?

cheers,

Paolo
A friend of mine gave me copies of lessons on laws of propagation, level engineer. I was interested in this matter because I wanted to build a "Goldmund alike" cone. Indeed I was astonished by their listening results and ... price lol. Their statements are true although commercialy rhetorical:

I was never able to find something really scientifically interesting (or that I could understand) on the net.

Cheers

Well all this should be easy to test and measure - no?

I think there are a lot of things to be measured here... Where to place the spikes, How to place the spikes, the different materials that you are placing the speakers on, room resonances etc... However, you could compare a few different sets of measurements and see what you can come up with

Where to place the spikes, How to place the spikes, the different materials that you are placing the speakers on, room resonances etc
that makes measurement and comparison difficult. I did yesterday some resonance measurement on the shelf too. They showed a real difference between with spikes and without.
But I am not shure, if I moved the speakers slightly.
So I trashed the graphs. :cannotbe:

On the other hand, a typical user would probably just use the spikes, if he has some, without caring about room, materials etc.
At least I do so. That makes any measurement as good or bad as the next one.
If we can find a measurable difference with spikes, then they may have audible benefits in certain situations.

spikes

the purpose of spikes is really just to stop the forward/backward motion of the drive units, the larger the more pronounced, physically moving the cabinets thus stabilising the point source/or minimising the effects of not being a perfect point source.

Thats wot ifink...

If this is what someone else has already stated i appolagise.

Matt

Hi all,

Crazyhub, I am sorry but those Goldmund statements are absolutely
false and scientifically inacceptable.
In absence of comprovated facts we must continue to trust in our classic rational mechanical principles.
One have to demonstrate that "diode" can exist first, showing a rigorous theory or make a real "sample " and then we will comments.

Onform, your statement is not true. Spikes are just a smart escamotage to make moneys . They do not stop anything below
the FR . This bad concept is due to years and years of bad informations. I hope one day It will finish :bawling:

Do you know some wave propagation laws?
Did you understand what I explained in post 38? IYO, what is false in my statements in this post?
Can you explain me why you stated that diode cannot exist in the mechanical domain?

No you are wrong...

kind crazyhub,

Why you are so aggressive?
I have asked to you some scientific references. You have posted
the Goldmund's paper :whazzat:
If you agree with Goldmund I'can't continue. I'm sorry.
I know my little, and you? 😀

don't worry

Paolo
I really don't see why you thought I am/was agressive  However what I clearly see is that you didn't answer any of my questions :whazzat:
Please stop thinking only in the spring/mass domain, the main effect of spikes/cones doesn't work this way.

crazyhub,

Oh yes they work exactly so !

The concept of mechanical diode is a oxymoron. No one school-book
of mechanic report "diode" . If you are so superior to rewrite
the foundamentals of mechanic, please speak with MIT or NASA .
No offence here , I wan't continue on this tone. I'm not interested.

regards,

Paolo

Agree with onform, spikes where and are just a fashion accessory, Most problems with loudspeakers are due to poor design and budget with commercial manufacture, Hence foam rings round tweeters, sox in reflex tubes and endless repositioning from walls corners etc..

Best way to isolate a speaker is to hang it from the ceiling!

Failing that some rubber super balls cut in half!

Of go the ugly concrete route if ya must?🙄

Unfortunately I think you are right; most wont care. They will just try it with or without and see what sounds best in their room; its too subjective to one's tastes...

To a few others:
At this point I honestly think that NONE of us here on the forums can really state an evidence backed position because there are so many variables in the situation to decide. However, if one finds some quality documentation I think they may have an argument, but until then lets keep open discussion, weighing the possibilities of both sides. Please, no ultimatums and no harsh "your right/wrong" statements because that just leads to hurt feelings 🙁. Furthermore, it is always hard to type out your expressions and nuances in a message. In such instance, somebody does not know exactly how to take what you wrote; it can be interpreted for the good or the bad, or just misinterpreted all together. Once again, lets just respect the other person's position, and keep discussion 😀
