I did not know I had you as a friend, too ...
My AKSA topic here deserves you and many more of your kind and kinda sort 😱
now you are attempting to blacken the reputation of the product for spurious, dubious reasons.
your posturing here is both invalid and unjustified.
That would really worry me
Im not joking
Please dont get me wrong, but that doesnt sound too good

Power supply was also already built. I just added the toroidals to it.

Are you saying Hugh built it, and you just connected trafos?
Need voltage rating of your trafos
And exact configuration of trafo connect
Normally i use to remove those Black Gates...i have not patience to
wait them burn in...i have tested years ago and found no difference..since those early days i decide not to use them anymore..so..when i receive amplifiers in my home..i use to replace those black gates by others.... i keep the Silver Micas only..those i do not use to substitute.
Friends using it told me their frustration while waiting...i am not addicted to those things... i want the unit ready to use..plug and play.... no chance to wait.
My pleasure is to test, to compare... and i cannot be waiting weeks for that... as soon amplifier arrives it gonna be compared with others...my own pleasure.
My amplifiers usually do not have special parts.... i think i have small or short imagination...i cannot perceive very small differences.
Hugh amplifiers sounds good with special and no special parts... i have several and all them sound great...just unbeatable...well... i think no one of them are defective.

Carlos

Yes. The trafo ratings are all fine I made sure beforehand. They are 160W and 25v *2.
I dont think theres any problem there.
Actually I have an update. I decided to switch the amp on again today and then I started to play around with the speaker positioning. Then I spent a few hours listening and found that I had got back most of the sound I originally heard. The dynamics, bass, vocal presence etc.
I really do believe that it's less to do with the speaker postioning though but something somewhere is fluctuating.
It could well be the black gates, I must admit that I have never believed in the idea of burn in. I only have faith in what can be measured.
But things are not perfect so I will continue to listen over the coming weeks and see what happens.

Didnt know you had experience with measurements 😀
Cant make head or tail of your power supply
Strange supply, strange amp
2 trafos, on one supply board?
How are they connected?
Are trafos and supply board just floating around, and not secured?
Are you absolutely sure its all connected correctly?
May I ask how much you payed?
Anyway, I dont understand why Aksa doesnt take it back, at your shipping cost, simple as that, end of story

Tinitus,
The modules are trades, refurbished and brought to N+ level by me personally. The power supply board, which is two independent +/-36V supplies with common star earth, is brand new and uses Nichicon Gold caps with ultrafast soft recovery diodes bridges. The kit is supplied as amp modules mounted on a single heatsink, and power supply, with flying leads. Kenji mounted the trafos, wired them to the power supply, and power supply to the amps, and inserted all parts into a case.
As a rule I do not take back modules when the customer has reported a good sound, then there is evidence of cap break in. The remedy is simply time. This is the first case in eight years of selling AKSAs where anything remotely like this has occurred, and I will not be crucified for spurious reasons when outsiders seek to interfere. I might add that in December, on 20th, after many email inquiries I sent Kenji an email suggesting he buy the Lifeforce, which he declined, saying that his standards were likely so high no amplifier would meet his standard. I suggested he look elsewhere, as experience told me buyers with his approach were unlikely to be happy with anything they bought. He insisted. So any sense of exploitation is utterly, resolutely denied - this is a man who knew pretty much exactly what he was doing and chose to ignore advice.
I would invite all critics here to truly apprehend the time and commitment on my part to carefully answer no less than 60 emails on a single purchase.
Prices are listed on the website, though the trades are a bit cheaper.
I have pointed out to Kenji his wire trim on the power supplies could be a bit neater!
It appears the sound is returning, as I knew it would. However, a subjective assessment is not conducive to an objective measurement.
Kenji,
Thank you for your response. Cap break in on the Black Gates is a PITA as I have remarked before, but it is a real phenomenon. It is NOT easy to measure. As for believing only what you can measure, think again. There are some aspects of audio which cannot be measured, such as sound stage depth.
Cheers,
Hugh

OK, I understood it like you had mounted it complete with case and all, except the trafos
Thats why I couldnt believe what I saw
Thanks fore clarifying this, Kenji wasnt very clear on this, and said he just mounted trafos
Well, that sure did make me look dumm
As I said earlier, Kenji could just take it to a workshop and get it measured, just to make sure 😉
good luck, Im out
Salas said:You can try a 47R output resistor on B1, and if it does not show any instability problem driving your cable and AKSA, you will have a much lower source resistance than before with it. It works with 220R for sure, I haven't tried lower.
I built your capless version of the B1 and love it. It's a great partner with my other power amp as is and wouldn't touch a thing. I use a commercial pre with the AKSA and it's a very nice match.
Prof
The Elma switch that had a problem was a source selector.... 2 pole 6 way. The fault was due to lack of use as the contacts were not being wiped regularly.
I accidentally unplugged the cd player from the amp without switching it off and there was a very loud bang from the speaker.
Can this damage the amp?
I am worried that I could have done damage.
Also is it ok to do this while the amp is on and the speakers are not connected to the amp?

yes it still works.
But what about the delicate tweeter windings?
Also can the amp be damaged in this way?
Professor smith said:

Absolutely. You have probably damaged the bass section. Maybe Hugh will sell you a new amp. I really pity him.
Kenji,
If the fuses on the amp are good and offset and bias remain within specification, you are OK and the amp is not damaged.
You should not connect and disconnect sources to amps whilst on. It's asking for trouble because of coupling cap charge currents and potential earthing discrepancies.
Tweeter windings are protected by one, sometimes two, blocking caps, so they are only destroyed by oscillation.
Woofer windings enjoy no such protection. Ensure your woofer is OK by checking the voice coil directly - disconnected from the amp - with a DMM.
Cheers,
Hugh

Ok I was just making sure.
''You should not connect and disconnect sources to amps whilst on. It's asking for trouble because of coupling cap charge currents and potential earthing discrepancies.''
Could you please explain what you mean by this?
The sound is still fluctuating by the way.
Is burn in time proportional to the level of the input going into the amp in other words volume of the music being played back?
Well...it is time to this show to finish.
My dear friend Hugh Dean and forum friends...please, do not waste your time anymore.
This amplifier will never be good..... there are other interests into such things to keep it producing the most exotic defects..it is an extermination procedure that is on the run.
Mr. Professor, seems to me wants to be under the spot..to be know as the one said the best wide world amplifier is no good.
This is the short cut to be famous.
Some of this tougths may be imagination too... despite i think he may be a show man.... observe the number of hits in this thread...alike a Roman gladiator arena... and they guy with the finger down! (well... finger down means not to kill as i could learn...the opposite related what we think about... not to kill is the meaning...interesting that... Hystory Channel)
One show man recognizes the other very fast and easy!... but observe my "shows" helps people.
What is the best way we can have to be famous.... challenge a big one!
And you were selected ear Hugh....no one can challenge the most famous Nelson Pass...he is so connected to the forum that the one try that will not succed....so... the second most famous is you.
I will unsubscribe to this thread... also moderators will come to ask me to "drop the finger pointing"... as usual.
I do not like this guy..he was blocked into my mail inbox as i could perceive he wants to be under the spot using your as foot step.

Any more listening impressions
are welcome. 😎
How is status with your sound machine, Professor Smith .. today?
In a bad mood any man can get any message the wrong way around.
Such things happens I know.
So, I do not take it too serious.
Tomorrow, when you Don't Worry and you are Being Happy, REALLY
you will think the other way again.
Hugh. Dont get you into offtopic matters.
I know you have some manners.
Keep it that way. It is your style.
I do not even need to tell you this. But for others it might be a lesson

Carlos,
you being a little unfair here too dont you think, how can you state that the aksa is the world best amplifier, this is being biased, it may be good, I havent had the pleasure of listening to one but taste differs and using a aksa in a particular setup doesnt mean its going to sound better than other amp in that particular setup, same source same speakers. As an example, I have a cheapy sony cd player, this coupled to my electrocompaniet monoblocks sounds horrendous but with a cheapy jvc amp that has stk module it sounds rather good. Using my audiophile marantz cdplayer with the jvc amp and the sound is not that good at all and I would prefer using the sony player, but when coupled to the electrocompaniet amps its way above a couple of leagues above the other combinations. I have found similar differences when it comes to speakers too. It could happen that I try an aksa and find that it doesnt sound good with my source and speakers too, this wouldnt mean that I regard it as a bad amp. One has to match components too. Having just a very good amp combined with lesser speakers and source could endup sounding worse than using a cheapy amp. Now this wouldnt make the amp a less competent amp than the cheapy would it??
In the prof s setup maybe the aksa just doesnt work for him and another amp may be better sounding, we must respect that rather than accuse the prof of miscief although I dont know whats been written in the behind scenes emails. Every manufacturer and kit seller will claim that their products are the best offcourse, they want to sell them, who to believe
, I always first listen to a product in combination with my other audio components before I purchase although this isnt always viable because it could cost hard earned cash but its the best way to go. Can you be truly honest and say that you have listened to every amp in the world and with every speaker and every source available and found the aksa to always sound the best irrespective of the combination, I doubt that. A well respected reviewer found a cheapish Rotel amp to sound better than a aksa55 and he used high quality speakers and source which I would love to have.
I have one of these Rotel amps, now retired in my garage but I was not too happy till I modified it when it was being used.
BTW, I have listened to a nelson pass amp and not liked it compared to my amp in my setup but Ive also built a simple preamp design of his and this combined with my amp and I sold a very expensive preamp which recieved very high praise from around the world.

Homemodder- maybe it's just his opinion that it's the best in the world just like somebody else might say that Bose make the best loudspeakers in the world?
I think I can say with even more certainty now that something somewhere, probably the amp is fluctuating in some way. In the last post I said the sound had come back but now it has gone back again. I didnt change anything else in the setup.
The sound changed within a matter of 12-24 hours.
