Preamp Kit - New DIY'er

I think I've mislead you.

6L6 is offering a B1 build, the same circuit that I'm offerring.

This is a very easy build that doesn't need much experience.

The B1 however has NO GAIN. 1V in = 1V out.

With a CD source, the 2V in is often enough to drive a Power Amp with only a volume control in the audio path.

Anything less that that will require an amplifying stage to boost the level to (ie 2V).

Phono needs the additional complexity of changing the frequency response to counteract the recording process.

How are most people using the B1 then? Will it not work in my application? I eventually want to add a DAC to mix.

My amp is a B&K Reference 200.2 S2

The B1 is just an impedance buffer.

It has NO GAIN.

A DAC will probably have an output similar to that of a CD player.

It is BRILLIANT at taking a source that needs a high impedance load and then feeding that to a low impedance amplifier.

In simple terms it accepts a common input and will feed a common output. It's like a mediator between two enemies. It wont shout but it will communicate between them.

I get that much, what I'm concerned about is you saying it "might" work with a CDP. That's not what I want to hear (pun intended).

Yes, that is quite true.

However you haven't looked at the details of his amp, which were found immediately on googling it;

It's 1.4v to full output, with a 33K input impedance, so a B1 is practically perfect for what he's after.

WHEW. Hey 6L6, this is what I've ordered so far based off your thread.

B1 PCB plus 4 matched JFETS
Transformer - Avel-Lindberg Y236001 15va 9v+9v
Circuit board - Universal Power supply PCB from Peter Daniel

I'm on my way but need as much guidance as you're willing to give

Guys, sorry about the confusing PM's. One minute I feel like I can do this, the next I feel like it's over my head.

I've decided to build the 6L6 version since your thread has such fantastic photos and links. I just ordered the board.

Make the jump. The B1 is a good project to break you into DIY. Mine I did stock as presented in the writeup. I have a wallwart for it but use an energizer battery to power it. So in my setup I drive a DIY chipamp with the B1 with the Pearl 2 connected for vinyl and an Adcom DAC 700 toslink connected to a pioneer pd-65. Plenty of pictures out here to help as well as other DIYer's. Have fun.

Here are a couple pictures of my B1 with battery power.
