Practical Implementations of Alternative Post-DAC Filtering

I listened to all 3 samples.
A1 and B1 are the most relaxed wide, maybe a little blown, soft sound.
A2 and B2 to tighten, atmosphere is gone, bright, at complex passages a little nervous. Bass is not so deep but more tight. Neutrality is gone...
A3 and B3 is mixture of both ... more clean than 1, bass is deep but tight...more control on every specter. But not so relaxed as 1... hard to choose. Try to get that relaxed atmosphere back and this is the winner.
Can you tell us what is 2 and 3 modification.
Thank you.

The level difference does explain what was worrying me at first. One of the samples seemed to have clearer vocals, at least until I switched back.

I think an evening of Genesis is now in order 😀

Any update on if Joe is actually going to listen to these?

There's a .5dB difference in the levels of the two files.

Hmmm 😉

SHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Yes, yes, yes.

Sorry if I spilled any beans.

Not at all.

Enlighten me. I used Audacity and that is telling me all tracks are the same level. At least the way I'm using it anyway.

In previous listening tests I even went as far as recording a test tone and measuring playback levels on a meter/scope. That drew complaints too although none of you knew I was doing that.

So how do you match the level of two tracks in Audacity.

Ah, then I'll pass until a better set of files is brought out. Level matching being what it is and all...

As with all these tests and trials, the more we have and the better. So over to you guys 🙂 Put some files up with a modded DAC.

Dave... you should have your file to do whatever it is you want to do with it.

Can you give us a sample of original filter without 0.22f cap ... with 0.22f cap on analog part than 0.22f on digital part. And 0,22f on both lines. So 4 samples. It is enough last minute of genesis sample. I still think if it is worth to buy that caps.Thank you

odd. Foobar says peak is within 0.02dB for all 3, but RMS is 0.5dB different for A3. It reports the B tracks as all the same.

Interesting. As I mentioned earlier (or as you can probably tell 😀), I'm no expert on file handling and how to do all these things. Its all been very much trial and error and learning over the months.

One thing is always abundantly clear though, and this is on all the listening tests I've run, and that is that it always seems to come down to being an exercise in file handling rather than just sitting down and listening. Whatever the truth with the levels here (and they are all pretty close whatever the outcome) I would ask (seriously) does it matter that much. Even if there were a couple of db difference (as there could be if you were listening to two different models of DAC, or two phono cartridges etc) then just turn it up and keep listening and comparing. If there is a difference then eventually you will pick up on it and hopefully be able to express a preference for one over another. I didn't use Foobar for listening to these, just my normal speaker/amp combination and using the DAC of my Marantz Pearl-Lite to play the files from a USB stick.

Hi androa,

The big problem with all this is that it is all very time consuming to do, not least dismantling the player and rebuilding it up each time and so in all honesty I'm going to say that I've probably gone as far as I want to at the moment, other projects on the go and all 🙂

One thing I will say though and that is that I honestly haven't decided whether to keep this player in its modded form or not. We need more of you to listen and comment. When we are done I'll post my listening impressions that I've been writing down as this has all progressed.

And as the super caps go, well they cost very very little and so you should try them yourself if you have a suitable candidate.
