Beta version results

Hi everyone,
I got some pics from my beta version proyector.
I'm using an Proxima Ovation 842 LCD panel, and a 400w MH single ended monster bulb with a soup laddle reflector , a 60mm condenser lens (DiYLabs) an 80mm Triplet projection lens (DIY Labs), an OHP fresnel from Surplus Shed in a custom made OHP style box (actually a PC Cabinet). For the screen I pick a Window Shade from WallMart and stick some black fabric for the borders.
I'm very pleased with this first results, so now I will take my time and do the detailled work, stripping the panel,, improving the light box (needs to be improved because I'm wasting a lot of light in this quick setup) and put all the things inside a MidTower Pc Cabinet.
So here are some pics (Its my first results post so I hope to being doing it well)

NICE home theater,Good projection pics too.I'd like to add that the image always looks better in person,I've had the 840/42/46 etc series and they are the BEST projection panels out there PERIOD no one who has had them all and compared them all can deny it.

I'd like to know what camera did you use bfourcade? nice job! 🙂

bfourcade,

Looks good. I was wondering where you got your lcd panel from. I am in Foz de iguacu brasil now but panels seem impossible to find on this side of the world. I guess you bought it off ebay for under $100 you dont pay duty. I bought dell lcd which I broke. I had to pay $125 duty plus $60 ship.

How far is your fresnel from the lcd? When joined they need to be at 7 inches from the bulb as opossed to 9 when they are split. Anyone can explain this?

HI, N.Design, thanks for your words.
Its is my first panel I've not tried another LCD but I'm happy with this first results. Then, as everyone here, we start to look for better results and look for a best resolution/contrast LCD to improve the image. For now I will try to get the best out from this panel for economic reasons. I need to do the "Real Job" and build a definitive proyector in a compaq case with a better looking.

My camera is an old Kodac DC290 (2.1 MegaPixel).

Hi Dracul, thanks.
I bought the Panel to Alan in DIY Labs. He buy it for me in USA and send complete with manuals, PS, Remote, Cables in perfect conditions almost like new. All the inputs works and just a couple of dead pixels (1 outside of the video area, so it is unnoticeable). I must recommend buying from DIY Labs. I wait a little bit to get my order arrived but the time worth it every day !!

2 more pics taked at night.

Dracul.

I dont split the fresnel.
I dont have too much experience but I begun with TV projection (with a 13"TV and a fresnel) and fresnels do not work well for images (not the cheap ones). They are intended for lightening use, not image use. (sorry my english)
When you use the fresnel in the image path (once the image has been created) they put undesirable aberrations in color and focus because they are simply plano convex lens optimized in size.
I understand that splitting the fresnel will make the light pass colimatted in through the LCD but I'm using a projection panel that was designed to be used in conjuntion with an OHP that concentrates the light in the projection triplet. So I dont think splitting my fresnel will help me to get a better contrast in the image. May be the better contrast will be opaqued for a poor image because color aberrations and side lost focus undesirable efects.
My Fresnel is at 30cm from the arc of the bulb (20 cm to the mirror and 10 from the mirror to the fresnel). I think I need to move the bulb 2 cm (for 32 cm) because the light reaching my triplet is a little bigger that lens diameter so may be I'm losing light at the sides. All this improvments will be done in the next compact/stripped version.

Bernardo.

My Fresnel is at 30cm from the arc of the bulb

Thats 11.81 inches. How is that possible? What OHP fresnel doubled are you using with that FL? What is your top FL? You are losing a lot of light there I would imagine. I got diylabs doublet. Looks like I can use them unsplit also but the back focal is 7 inches this way. It should be 9 but it works best at 7 from the arc.
Can anyone explain this?

Looks like you bought a commercial screen. Have you looked into making your own screen. I saw something close in Posadas called Tela Atoxica Blanca at a place called Queros Tores. I now think it may be too smooth and result in hotspots. I say this because I looked at blackout cloth that is recommended by diy people and this blackout is much more textured.
Have you got any ideas for screen material in Argentina?

Hi Dracul,

I bought the fresnel from Surplus Sheld (www.shurplushed.com) and it´s an OHP Fresnel (Item: L3054 11-1/4” SQUARE FRESNEL LENS ).
I didnt split the fresnel so I have no way of accurately meassure the focal lenghts. One side have an sticker that states "This Side towards lamp" so It is the shorter focal lenght fresnel. So I´d have to meassure it just by trying diferents positions. Its not so hard because most of the distances are fixed (Triplet to Panel is determined by the focal lenght of the triplet). I´m using the panel almost in touch with the 6mm glass thath sandwiched the fresnel (actually , since the panel has not been stripped yet, there are another glass and space built in the panel itself off 3/4" (for the air to flow) so practically I have 1" bettwen the Fresnel and the LCD. So the only distances to variate is the bulb - Fresnel. Its just a matter of put a white sheet of paper where the triplet goes and move the lamp till the light concentrates on the paper almost in the same diameter of the triplet lens.
May be I was lucky because the triplet and the fresnel comes from OHP proyectors and the panel size is optimized for this lens sizes and FL. Now for get the same results in a 15" LCD area I think you may need special focal lenght lenses in order to iluminate a much wide area and get it concentrated again on a small triplet lens.
If you use a "relatively" small proyection lens (80mm in diameter for proyecting an image rectangle of 37cm in diagonal at 30cm !!)you need to optimize your light path very well . Get the most out from your lamp at correct distance to let the fresnel catch the light and pass it on a 37cm diagonal rectangle and concentrates it again on an 70mm diameter at 30cm. Your focal lenghts must be accurately calculated.
So, if you want it, I have a 150mm diameter triplet lens that may help you catch a lot more of light from your LCD without the needing of such a wide and short cone of light from your Fresnel. your image will be super bright beacuse of the lens diameter in the same focal length (320mm) and very sharp and color corrected because it´s a triplet lens. So email me if you need it.

The Screen: I bouhgt a Window Shade (cortina automática con resorte de esas que tiras y traban y luego haciendo un pequeño tiron hacia abajo y soltandola se recojen solas) (sorry here, my english is very poor) from EASY (www.easy.com.ar) here in Cordoba in offer (saldo) just for the mechanism. I was thinking in replace the material later with Blackout cloth. But surprise, when I went to the fabric shop and ask for blackout they show me the same material my Window Shade has. You can tell it because its 3 layer vinyl or plastic white (or any color outsides) and black in the middle thier. You can ask for it as "blackout" literally (almost here in cba they named it in english). Due your are in Argentina, if you want, I can buy it some here for you. Just let me know.
