Popping sound in X1 Preamp channel

If you've changed the ZVN's you need to check the gate voltage, they should match within a 1/10 of a volt. They come off the roll pretty consistent 90 % of the time, but there are about 10% that are way off. We went through that in production of the UGS-4's

No I haven't changed the zvn's.
And these are ugs 6 modules.
But I really appreciate the obvious concern and your going above and beyond.

New trimpots have arrived. I'll fit those when i get the chance.
Been one of those days where trying to plan anything does not work.
Stock deliveries, parts deliveries, deliveries for other peoples projects, customers, phone calls....

Maybe I should recap since I kinda stuck this into a thread dealing with my friends X1 🙂

The last few posts have been about My X1.
I bought this about 10 years ago.
Before I got it, it had been refurbished by PL. (it has the correct stickers to confirm this)
I was told by the seller that the display had also been replaced at that time.
It came to me with the UGS 6 modules in place so I would assume the needed changes were done when it went 'home' 😀
It's never missed a beat or done anything wrong in all these years.

This is the only time I've taken a soldering iron to it.
I've replaced the 1k resistors around the regulators, and a few 4.75k that were just starting to discolour.
I've uprated these resistors to half watt and spaced them of the board a few mm.

After seeing the trimpots on my friends create such havoc, I decided to replace mine as well. Preventative maintenance 🙂

On that note, I got those in last night, and by measuring from the ZVN tabs, it is tuning to the zero vdc faster and more stably than the silly 25 turn pots I initially put in there.

I will post pics when I get them of the camera 🙂

Many thanks Guys. Your the men 🙂

It definitely has the 'D' stickers.
And has been re-soldered.
Pretty obvious to me that several regulators and associated resistors have been swapped out.

Pic time.
Ok yes I've used four turn pots now 🙂
But they are way more stable and predictable than the silly 25 turns I did have in there.
So far the adjustments are below 20mv.
But I had to go out today, so I've turned it back on and will let it warm up and stabilise again.

No matter, I'm patient 🙂

It will be painfully obvious as to which resistors I've replaced 😉

And done 🙂
I'm using 4 turn bourns pots.
Adjusting them isn't to terrible, no real hysteresis I came across, certainly way easier than the 25 turn pots I did try.
The only delay I had was when you lift the cover, it starts to thermally drift, so you can only tweek it once before you need to let it thermally stabilise again.
But after all this, as far as I can tell, I have it so near zero because you open the lid, throw the meter probe in there, and its starting to cycle from pos to neg or neg to pos within seconds.
Me happy enough with that.
Time to close it up and put it back into it's hole 🙂

Thank you to Nelson, Wayne, Kent, and all the others at PL that we don't hear about 😀

Also thank you to those that have the money to buy this stuff new, and then sell it cheap so the rest of us mere mortals can enjoy the 'good bits' 🙂
