yeah, I cant answer. none of the first 3, not even close, but I cant quite answer 4, because there are things I wont do if it doesnt really provide enough benefit vs the trouble when it gets to the point of chasing performance that is already well beyond what I can hear.
I wouldnt, for example swap my first born. it shouldnt need to burn 1000W in idle while i'm out getting pissed because its so fragile, with such a tenuous grip on good sound that it cant cool down and takes 4 hrs to warm up ... thats just an aversion to inefficient design IMO, not so much green.

Motivation? Motivate me to do what? To build stereo gear instead of buy it? None of the above. I build it because I like building things. I like using (in this case listening to) things I built. I don't need to design it, but I also don't want a "kit" or paint-by-numbers, I want to select parts (although I generally avoid trendy boutique parts), do the casework and layout, wire stuff up.
I don't build these things to save money, but I have a general sense that I can build something good for less than it would cost to buy -- excluding tools, extra parts I bought because they looked nice and I thought I might have a use for them some day, etc. And shipping...
Hand in hand with that, I tend to believe that simpler designs stand a better chance of sounding good for less money, if well executed. But "simpler" is not what drives me, although it plays a role in the decisions I make about what I am going to build.
Green? Like qusp said, I don't want to pay for electric power that is wasted, but I don't mind shunting some current to ground to make a better-sounding voltage regulator either.
Absolute best sound? Really, I couldn't care less. I want it to sound good to me, which is a standard that evolves and is informed by cost, hassle, availability (of time, materials, energy, etc.) and probably other factors I can't think of. But I really don't compare what I build to the stuff in shops, or to some notion of "best", and I don't care how such a comparison would fare. Frankly the smell of hot solder flux is more important to me than the final result on some absolute scale.

I would think it is posible for all the veiwers, followers, what have you, to just treat this as a basic generailzed question??? Maybe if we just imagine that we logged on and there were 4 new posts, with the titles of the multiple choice answers... Which one would you read first?

flg, it was started in direct reaction to and at the very same time as the convo in the JC thread as a continuation/extension of it... I cant answer, none suit, it would be a lie to answer any of them. I cant pretend i'm someone else and from the number of replies, I dont seem to be the only one ...

my personal enjoyment/satisfaction and some obsession drives my DIYAUDIO habits, but I do have lines I wont cross, because its a hobby and needs to pay back. the end needs to in some way justify the means and I dont just mean objectively, that could be clean design, good numbers, great sound, pretty looks, nice symmetry etc but some things people insist on I would deem a fault. thats OK, its only audio

With the individuality of the avarage diy-er, how can you ever hope to get a usefull answer here? Of course everone builds what he thinks 'best' in one way or another. That's why you can't define 'best', and that's why nobody can really give a useful answer.
Then there's the expertise - someone building a p2p tube amp will have different perceptions of 'best' than someone who builds a chip amp from a kit, or yet again someone who designs his amp from scratch.
I can tell you how I look at it: I try to design from scratch the best I can but with reasonable resources, certainly not 'all out'. Can I do better at any one design? Probably, by trowing more money at it. Which I don't.

My primary goal for a one-off is usually to have the most-accurate reproduction. So I would not typically choose 1, 2, or 3 as the primary consideration.

haha, I don't actively participate in the BT II thread, when it is technical it is way over my head anyway. But for me none of the above. What motivates me is to do something different. It doesn't have to be better or best just something that someone else hasn't done (as far as I can see). If it works then all the better! 🙂

Fun and different for me. A combo of Zenmod & Wintermute. Throw in some of Jan's "looks about right" and that's about right for me. 🙂
For me as someone who only been doing DIY audio stuff for a few years, I am looking for an improvement in performance over my previous builds. I did start out simple and with each subsequent project have been successful in this quest so far. I don't need to do the designing (not my field of expertise), and I'm not adverse to kits, the performance improvement (subjective I know) is what I'm interested in.
