Semisentient - Look here for 'HomePro-Fi', as it can give you some ideas where to go.
Pi Speakers - unmatched quality and state-of-the-art performance
If you later turn to a project similar to JBL's or a 100dB Nightclub speaker, look here

I have been checking out those Pi systems on and off for a while, they seem pretty nice. I will check the other thread you linked, thanks.

topicstarter wants OB and don't wants horns..:tilt:
Good for him.
It will need a good mid-range (cone) driver speaker then.
Recent I was looking at the RCF L10/568H (big 10" driver).
Go look at speakers (or DIY) w the likes (JUST IDEAS) for the main driver.
RCF MB8G200
RCF L8S800
Eminence DeltaPro-8
Eminence Legend 875 (Guitar Speaker)
The 'small' Selenium 6W4P
Eminence Alpha-6A
Faital Pro M5N12-80
Faital Pro 5FE120
Faital Pro 6FE120
P.Audio WN-520N

I was interested in OB, but heard too many conflicting opinions on how they would sound with the music I listen to. I still would consider horns, but am leaning towards more traditional, big "speakers in a box" designs. I am looking more for concert experience than the refined audiophile experience, so to speak.

lol I am so confused...

-I will use a digital active crossover.

I wanted to go open baffle, but was afraid they wouldn't have the bass impact I am looking for.

Any suggestions?

Design it yourself! 🙂

(..those few designs that are available are usually passive designs.)

Basic thoughts:

"Slam" and "Punch": Sealed alignment, high mass baffle. for your midbass/woofer section.

"Open Baffle": open baffle for your midrange.

(Garage/a.k.a reflective spacious sound): Dipole treble.

Yup, not too hard if you have a rainy weekend to spare

Yup and not too expensive on the woofers. Some small motor PA types will do.

Yup, well sort of

I've been known to hang a piezo on the back when they aren't against a wall. Probably make those for $500 and with your EQ you can make them sound good.

I think I am leaning towards the Econowave as of now. That may change in 15 minutes 😉

Many have been made, and they are cheap. That will leave more money for whatever I want to build next...

I will have to see if any have been built with 15" woofers.
If you are using an active xover, then the Ewaves give you somewhere to start, but there is no need to limit yourself to the 2 way Ewaves. I'd planned on a set of high eff surrounds for the HT, and using a DCX and JBL2225 (ported 6th order), 2123 and B&C DE250 on an Ewave WG had excellent results in about 10 mins once everything was in the boxes. I built it as a proof of concept with old boxes I had laying around so it was rough, but worked well. All the drivers were VGC second hand except for the 2123 which were NOS. Total driver and WG cost was about the same as 1.5x the price of a single 2226 new list price here.
Changed residences since then and so I'm still using the JBL2225 LF section, but going with a coax above.

If I build the Econowaves, I will go with one of the recommended passive crossovers. This way I can still use my DEQ. I was hesitant to spend much on crossover components, when an active XO was possibly cheaper and much more flexible. That is not the case with the Econowaves (at least $ wise).

Anyways, I am more interested in the building side of things, as opposed to the designing as of now.
