Let me know what you think of those Supravox 215 2000 EXC full range drivers, ok?

Hi Tubeguy,

I have just finished my latest tuning on my prototype (mono). My field coil bass comes in at 250Hz, and the supporting Seas Exotic T35 tweeter at 20K.

I am totally stoked with the sound! It is seamless, beautifull and astounding. Consentrating on the Supravox, I have to say that it does not sound llike other FR drivers I have heard like Lowthers and Fostexs - it lacks the top end shout. It does however have the immediacy and coherence and realism!

Cheers

David

Dave,

For the $$$$ you spent on the Seas Exotic T35 tweeter did you also consider the Tweeter Supravox TG1? The TG1 is a special design that uses a titanium dome covered in a pure layer of solid gold and "supposedly" has very interesting horizontal and vertical dispersion characteristics. I read somewhere that titanium and gold each have unique resonant properties that actually cancel each other out!

Hi Tubeguy,

I had bought the T35 at the beginning of the project along with the matching W8 mid. The W8 did not work out in the open baffle - sounded flat and had no midbass, but the T35 is the nicest sounding tweeter I have ever heard.

I did not consider any metal dome tweeters in my original plan, as I wanted a "soft dome" sound.

I have to say that I am really pleased with all three drivers. I can hook any of them direct up (with a cap for the tweeter) to my little mini system and listen to them all day long. I think it is very important that drivers should sound great as well as measure right for the job.

I have to admit that when I switched over to the Supravox, I did think about whether I should be using a different tweeter, but I thought that I should persist with it, and I am very happy with what I am getting.

Cheers

My FE206ES-R Drivers

This post is for all who took a part in this thread from the very beginning. Way back when I first pinged Scottmoose asking him to please email me at his earliest convenience! Back then I had a very BIG problem with my Sachiko's FE206ES-R drivers and I was so distraught, that I didn't know who to turn to. I DEFINITELY didn't want to tell Mike ---{I was too embarassed}--- to tell him I tried ---{like a fool}--- to further improve the FE206ES-R's performance by using his cone treatment, a group of 5 different substances I wasn't familair with at all! Sadly I learned the lesson of why Mike doesn't sell his incredible driver treatment to DIYers, the hard way.

It looked so easy when Mike was doing it. I thought anyone should be able to do this but, was I ever mistaken. When I tried to apply the cone treatment instead of acheiving the same awesome sonic improvement Mike always gets, all I did was take the driver's magic away. IMO they were still sonically superior to a stock FE206ES-R but, the magic that had previously made them sound almost like live, unamplified music was being played had disappeared. I almost wanted to cry over this loss. Not only because of the loss of the magic but, even more painful than that was the knowledge that I did this horrible thing to myself!!!!

Well thankfully people here at diyAudio were almost like a family to me when times got rough. A couple of people came through and even reluctantly offered to sell their beloved FE206ES-R drivers so I could replace mine, have Mike to work his magic by reapplying his cone treatment all by himself, until the magic returned once again. However I began to think that now was perhaps the time to buy the final set of single fullrange drivers for my system.

I am satisfied with my integrated amp and will keep it until one of passes away. I am also satisfied with my CD player and feel no need to look for something better. I feel the same way about my interconnects & speaker wires. I'd have to hit the lotto to be able to afford anything that would be a significant sonic upgrade from any of these components. So I felt now was the time to buy a pair of fullrange drivers that I fell the same way about.

In the in end this actually event that started so horribly turned out to be a blessing. My friends I'm hear to let everyone know that I have purchased a pair of Fostex FE208ES-R drivers! They should be arriving at my home someday next week! So I want to extend my thanks to all who were concerned and tried to help me. In the end it all worked out better than I could have ever hoped. To me this is a dream come true and I couldn't be happier. Once the FE208ES-Rs arrive and I've had a chance to listen to them I'll post another update about them.

I for one will be very interested in the results...

Dave, I'm right there with you. The seller says he believes the Sachiko/FE208ES-R combo sound will be similar overall to the Sachiko/FE206ES-R only cleaner, with even better bass and overall balance.

It should be very interesting indeed! I really cannot afford to build different enclosures after buying the FE208ES-R's. I'll be financially tapped for awhile now.

Hey Tubeguy,

Great news on the cones! Will be very interested to hear your impressions.

Post some pics too.

P.S. I got no reply from Mike.

Cheers

David

Thanks David I'm very excited myself. I'll be delighted to post my impressions & post some pics too. Send me an email at thetubeguy1954(at)yahoo(dot)com with whatever questions you have for Mike and then I'll forward it to Mike so it's coming from me on your behalf, ok?

Hope you like the 208ES-R units. It's supposedly the best (wide-band) driver Fostex have made in the last decade or so. Should work very nicely in the Sachiko cabinet. Sorry I haven't been around -no time for audio over the past few weeks & I'm still pretty much screwed at present.

Hello Scott!

Thanks for your words of encouragement! I'm really excited by all this. A little over 20 months ago now I was introduced to the world single fullranger drivers through your incredible Sachiko enclosures and now I have what I'm told is supposedly the best extremely-wide-band driver Fostex have made in the last decade or so! Clark says he doubts I'll need a tweeter and I'm inclined to agree based on this direct comparison of a 208ES vs 208ES-R. As you can see the 208ES-R has a much more extended and flatter frequency response than the 208ES does.

I really need to thank you Scott for the Sachiko design, Jeff for building them for me and Clark for allowing me to obtain the 208ES-R drivers. You three have literally changed my views on audio and what's really attainable. For those who claim a single full-range or extremely wide-range driver cannot sound like live, unamplified music, I say, that belief just proves you've never heard a single full-range or extremely wide-range driver in a proper enclosure!

Hi Tom, nice to see you tracked down a pair of your dream drivers 😉 I'll quit looking from now on. Frankly i'm amazed you came accross a pair so quickly, well done sir!

Bests to you & have fun when you receive them 😀

Mark.

Hey Mark!

Thanks so much for these encouraging words. I cannot tell you how happy I am!!!! This is it for me unless I hit the lotto, I now have my final amp the Mastersound Reference 845 SET, my final CD player the Goldenote Stibbert tubed CDP, my final wires which are the Stealth Audio Sakra ICs, Dream speaker wires and M21 Super power cords, which can be seen here: Thetubeguy1954's Final Audio System and now I've finally obtained my last speakers by getting the FE208ES-R drivers to put in my Sachiko cabinets! Now I can focus on just listening to and buying new music.

I love my Saburo's with FE126E's and would expect the 8"ES-R big brother would aim to please in the same type cabinet. My wife may hate the 6' tall cabinets flanking our entertainment area but she can't complain about the sound. Glad you got your dream drivers, now listen and be happy.....
