Hi TubeGuy,

Hello dcathro!

Are you wishing me luck because you already asked and were refused?

I am just wishing you good luck. I know what it feels like to make a mistake and feel like the doors are closing around you!

I'm really getting tired of :headbash: punishing myself for this stupid, irreversible, thing I did to my FE206ES-R drivers...

It is easy to make mistakes that we regret. trying to push the boundaries is always a risky business.

I have just bought some Supravox 215 2000 EXC full range drivers for my DIY speaker build, and have had various recomendations to do different treatments. If I do anything to them that I don't love, it is irreversable and an
expensive recone. When I have completed the project, I may consider doing something if I feel there is a need.

Cheers

David

Hi Tubeguy,

(a) why isn't reconing an option?

(b) wouldn't it be easier to get the FE208ES-R's from Japan?

Hello rjbond3rd!

(a) It's certainly something I'd consider. Are there cones available for the FE206ES-R driver? Being limited edition I thought they'd be different that the standard cones used in the FE206E. Additionally now that I fluckered up the FE206ES-R, I'm trying more diligently to find the FE208ES-R drivers I was originally looking for when I "settled" for the FE206ES-R!

(b) I check six different Japanese auction and sale sites everyday! I have someone I know in Japan but, unfortunately he doesn't check his emails very often. I actually did find one pair of FE208ES-R drivers in an auction 2 weeks go but, by the time the person I know in Japan checked his email and got back to me the auction had ended and the FE208ES-R were already sold... :crying: :bawling:

Hello David!

Thanks for your goodwill. I know this much "if" I ever get back to where I was I won't mess with what I have again. Let me know what you think of those Supravox 215 2000 EXC full range drivers, ok?

Hi Tubeguy,

No doubt the cone material and voicecoil etc. are specific to the model but if all else fails (at least as a backup plan), someone could reverse-engineer the wire, the windings, the cone size and material, the surround, electrical and mechanical properties. Nothing is impossible in DIY. Even the Feastrex are DIY'ed by /somebody/. 🙂

Hello Bob!

Yes I'm quite sure you're correct. I think someone will eventually come through with a pair of replacement FE206ES-R drivers if not the FE208ES-R drivers I so desperately want for my system. Thanks again for your input. It's very much appreciated.

Hi Tubeguy, how about FE208E-Sigmas + nice tweeter like the Fostex T90?

Hey Bob!

Actually my prayers may have been answered. One of our fellow diyAudio members sent me a private email essentially stating he has a pair of FE206ES-R drivers he'd "possibly" consider selling me. He asked me to make an offer but, I don't know what to offer for the pair!

They're supposed to be used in very good condition with phase plugs installed. The reason I don't know what to offer for these drivers is I got my first pair of NOS FE206ES-R drivers along with a pair of used F200A drivers from another very generous man named Steve. Steve sent me an email after he read something I said in an audio forum ---{here at diyAudio I believe}---about the Sachiko speakers I just received in 7/08 and how wanted them to sound the best they possibly could! Even then I was attempting to make them the final set of speakers I'd ever own but, I digress.

Steve sold me both pairs of Fostex drivers for a very good price! So the truth is I don't even know what the FE206ES-R drivers cost new. I think it was $400/pr but, I honestly don't know. I'm hoping someone here can please help me by telling me what is a very good ---{I'd like the man who offered to sell the FE206ES-R drivers to see I genuinely appreciate his offer}--- but, I don't want to make an offer that's ridiculously high for these FE206ES-R drivers. Can anyone help me with a suggested offer price I should make on the Fostex drivers?

A new set of FE206eSR sold for $444 USD + change. Phase plugs are $50/pr. Like a fine wine, and giving that the number of functioning drivers are decreasing, their value is probably appreciating. If you can get them for $500/pr he is giving you a deal IMO.

dave

Dave,

If I get a new set of drivers what would you charge to EnABL them if I decide to try that?

Hey Tubeguy,

Hope you get those cones;-}

Just out of curiosity, what is Mike Rispoli's proprietary, 5-step treatment.

Cheers

David

David,

All I can tell you is Mik'e process entails a series of 5 different liquid solutions that MUST be applied in a very specific order ---{boy did I sure find out the hard way about that}--- then be allowed to mostly dry before adding another of the solutions. Unlike dammar or C37 which dry & mostly sit on top of the cone, Mike's solutions absorb into the cone, do whatever it is they do, and then mostly but, not entirely evaporate, adding very little additional mass.

Sonically this process transforms the driver's ability from sounding like it's playing reproduced music to coming a lot closer to sounding like it's replicating live, unamplified music. Mike has told me this is not just result of added mass from his solutions as some have suggested but, it's a result of the affect the solutions have on the cone itself. It's quite honestly the best $150/pr I've ever spent on audio. I wished I could somehow get Mike R and Dave of Planet 10 together sometime because I'd love to hear both processes compared head to head and I'd like to see if a pair of Mike's treated drivers improve even further by having them EnABL'ed by Dave at Planet 10.

Dave (dcathro) remember I'm the guy that hurt the performance of his drivers when applying what I thought was just a simple add-on series of solutions. I'd highly suggest you contact Mike Rispoli directly at his email address theturk57@aol.com Mike will be much more able to provide you with an in-depth & informed explanantion of what his driver treatment actually does! If you try to contact Mike and he doesn't respond let me know, ok? His spam filter is very agressive.

in a hiro or poss. even your sachiko -
NIB Fostex FE166ES-R Full Range Drivers 166 es-r - eBay (item 280468233068 end time Feb-27-10 09:40:00 PST)
I came across this today and although you have the larger cabinets and i suspect with minor modification the sachiko may also work with the 6.5"es-r driver??

Hey MP9!

If I were to use a smaller driver in my Sachikos I'd use the 5 inch Fostex FE138ES-R drivers as they're the closest thing I could get to the FE208ES-R drivers I so desperately want.

I'd imagine there will likely be a limit to the flexibility of Scott's designs work well with drivers other than those for whose T/S parameter they were targeted - (the BVRs less so than the manifold horn designs).

Drivers of approx the same dimensions and class ( i.e. 8" "horn friendly"), could probably be substituted in the Sachiko without much sonic compromise (other than the differences inherent in the drivers, that some listeners might consider "deficient") , but much smaller diameter drivers such as the 4-5" range could be a different story.

Scott?

I have heard of Mike's process once before (could even have been one of your posts?), but have no other knowledge of him.

Such a conversation, or even better blind listening session, could be very interesting - if possible without conflicting egos, which I've directly experienced before .
