Proac 2.5 for home theater?

Guys, what do you all think of a MTM centre channel for home theater with the same drivers, xover and volume?

This would make it a very cheap but very good sounding 5 channel solution...

I guess the trick here is to either make it smaller OR a cleverly designed enclosure that won't look bulky...

I am not quite sure that it would be as easy as it sounds to use the same drivers for an MTM center. The impedance would change if woofers are connected in parallell and thus the crossover as it was is not valid anymore. Even if using a separate filter per woofer the level matching of the lows and the ends is not the same and quite a lot of work would be needed in order to get it tuned again. I was thinking of using the xact same volume and filter and just make the box completely different to go in the middle. I am planning on making one as soon as the other projects have been completed...

Please note however that speaker design is the last thing I claim to know even the slightest thing about...

I know there are threads on the Proac 2.5 center so search for this and I am sure some info will be available...

The ports on your clones

I noticed that you used flared ports on your clone. What are their diameters and the length? Is the length measured only on the paralel part or does it include the full port up to the outer flange?

Al, the length of the port is about 155mm full length from outer rim of inside and outside flare. I added some extra length to make up for the flare. Diameter is 75mm. Btw the flare is cut in mdf using a 22mm rounded router bit.

Regarding the Proac 2.5 Centre...

Howsabout connecting the additional woofer in series?

I've asked about sticking an 8ohm woofer into a crossover designed for the 4ohm version and it seems i just need to half caps value and double the inductance but keep resistance the same... i wonder if this is the same for adding another woofer...

Center

What would be the point on using 2 woofers in a center anyways? Are you not satisfied with the sound from your ProAc 2.5 or what?

I believe that if I build a center speaker to match my ProAc's I'll just make it as close to the other speakers as possible, so I don't have to fiddle around with the filters too much.

Here are some pics of my clones. Still working on active xovers.

The woodworker really did a great job on the boxes after some headscratching when he saw the requirements. ^_^ The pictures don't do it justice--the finish is certainly furniture quality. If you are in the Pgh area I can certainly pass on the info.

Re: Center

Swede,

In HT, the centre channel is where MOST of the action is, hence it is preferably to be full range so one can localize the action heard to the screen better.

I agree having a identical speaker for the front is more ideal but have difficulty designing a 37 litre enclosure. Use the same dimensions but place the drivers in the middle of the baffle?

Any suggestions?
