Philips CD650 mods

Good innit!!!!

You got yourself a D1 for the DAC yet?

In the meantime, put the full clock onto pin 4 on the dac via a seperate coax! (cut the track & leave the bitclock on pin 2)

When you get hold of a D1 or similar freq counter, put it onto pin2!

I've also been busy, a few more toys arrived yesterday so I set about a couple of area's i'd not paid lots of attention too.

1st I replaced all the remaining elco's on the Servo. I'd already done the main psu rails with Cererafine's I'd robbed from some of the other players i've played about with. A sprinkling of low uF Oscons. All values remained identical to preserve any filtering or timing of the circuit.

Next I played with the bit decoupling. I've put Vishay 400v 0.22uf MKPs onto the 6 LSB's. They are a bit of a tight squeeze! I had to run the earth via a short cable as they were too wide to pick up the earth track through the holes!.

I tried OsCon 1uF elco's on the MSB (whilst waiting for the post from Lee!!!)and was pleasantly surprised. They are not ideally suited to this application (so far as I am aware) but they seemed to clean things up nicely. Great dynamics, very detailed, suprisingly good given I'd just hooked the oscons in for a laugh!

Finally the postie arrived with the parcel from Lee!

Next in were the +/-15v main smoothers. The original Elna "for audio" 6800uF replaced with 22000uF Mundorfs!

Also in the parcel were mundorf 1uF MKP's for the MSB decoupling.
I replaced the OsCons and started to listen.

To be honest, it seemed to have backed off a little in dynamics with the later additions. Given the upgrade on the main smoothers i decided I should give it all a chance.

The system has been playing along to itself for about 30hrs plenty of time to start those big mundy's working. I had a good listen earlier and it's definately got the dyanamics back and more! listening loud and you can feel the tight controlled bass. The fact that it in no way interferes with the incredibly fast accurate mids and treble is..... Definately the best I've heard it yet! I suspect it will settle further too!

I've started to compile all my mods into a document which I'll upload over the next few days and provide the link!

Great work there Ian, nice to see some experimentation with cap types on the DAC decoupling pins. Remember the great Thorsten Loesch advocates an os-con on the MSB pin, and I personally consider him to be the pinnacle of DIY audio knowledge. I'm gonna chuck a big os-con on there, if I can fit one, and listen.

I noticed - now that I have better access to the back of my PCB (wait till you see a picture) - that I have a cap across the de-emphasis pins there. This goes to show that you can have a larger (pF) value at this spot as I tacked on a polystyrene on top and the sound got loads better. I'll remove the original cap and report lol

As for clocking, I have have the C1 feeding the digital filter, decoder and pin 4 of the DAC directly. The C1 seems happy driving all three at once! I did cut the trace between pins 2 and 4 on the DAC. Next step in clocking will be a C2, but I'm in no hurry.

Listening with the decoder clocked: wow, it's shockingly good! Much more detail and space now. Probably a more profound improvement than feeding a clock to pin 4 of the DAC or the SAA7220. Voices are better resolved so it's easier to hear what singers are saying. Dynamics have gone up a notch, particularly micro-dynamics. Cymbals (try track 12 on The Girl in the Other Room) have improved and the fast ending cymbal hits are beginning to sound metallic and dynamic with nice shimmer - one of the toughest things for a CD player to do. Stock player = white noise here.

Sorry for the essay chaps, but I'm very happy!

Interesting. I would say those oscons certainly sounded good there and they are pretty cheap! I may try hooking them accross the mundorf mkps and see what that does! poss best of both worlds??

I unsoldered the surplus 680pF SMD cap from under my TDA1541A's de-emphasis pins. Having over 1nF here didn't cause any problems but it does seem to sound a little clearer without the original.

After a listen I then replaced a few caps with small os-cons. These were previously a couple of Panasonic FC and a ZA around the decoder and its RAM chip. I dare say it's become a little more detailed, brighter and open. So far so good...

Excellent stuff.

I'm going to try some BG Nx caps on the dac decoupling.

Anyone have any idea what voltage is needed? I have a few 47uF 6.3v which I'd really like to try.

Also, my new clock should arrive tomorrow from Brent, so I'll let you all know how it compares to my current setup.

cheers, Lee.
