BBC* News service:

NEW! - High-End Active Loudspeaker from the UK - price estimated around 30K british pound.

(..note: dirty laundry and printer used as a visual reference for actual loudspeaker size.)

(*BBC = Bungled Badly Caption)

😀

Seriously - it does look like a 30K plus loudspeaker!

Scott you are far too kind.

If you think they look OK its a huge shame you can't hear them. Definitely function over form 🙂

They look nice but I haven't got the bottle to ask £30k even if they compare favourably with commercial stuff costing that. No speaker on earth is worth that IMO.

ROFL @ the cr@p scattered around the room. You should see the other side, lets just say its dedicated to DIY for the minute.

Are you still interested in blacking the tweeters? My dad went to an exhibition with his model friend who did the blacking for me and the company does a kit for aluminium as well. He got me a leaflet for you, says the cheapest kit is about £25. I'm going to send it on to you when it arrives here. LOL talk about a detour.

I quite like the natural alu against the silver now. The flash in the photo's seem to accenuate the colour difference, in reality and to the naked eye the colour match is close. All in all I don't think I'll bother now but pass your father my thanks.

I saw this baby in the flesh tonight (the speaker!😀 ).

Shin's done a fantastic job on the whole cabinet, really, really impressive. I didn't have a listen tho' so I can't comment. BUT if the cabs are anything to go by these should be stunning.

C'mon Ant we're all waiting in anticipation at the final result.

One last thing, the tweeters are a pretty good match to the silver. I wouldn't want to touch them but thats just my opinion.

Pics with baffle on. Waiting on the QED cable to wire the drivers up before fixing them in place.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

I like it ......................... {cause it reminds me of the Oakland Raiders}

😎

NICE!

It isn't a perfect match for the tweeter's aluminum, but its more than close enough - giving it that professional cohesive look.

What does look a little "off" though is what appears to be bolts and a plate near the bottom of the support. It gives it a "busy" look. I'd suggest black laquering it.

(..and then there is the book between the top cab and the bottom cab.. 😀 )

Hi Scott,

The rear leg doesn't match the tweeter at all, its brushed stainless steel with a few coats of laquer. I think it stands on its own(pun intended 😉) and I think if I'd gone for a flat matte natural alu look, like the tweeter, then it wouldn't have matched the gloss on the rest of the cabinet. The photo's don't capture half as much as I'm seeing unfortunately but it does look fitting.

The last photo was a little dark, here's a better one:

Your right about the alu base though, it does look a little cheap and naff. TBH this was a last minute decision after I realised that it would be next to impossible to fix the foot in place from the underside of the plinth with any accuracy. I was chatting to Steve(stee-b) who came around the other day and was voicing reservations about it.

I think it will be staying though, I'm really just wanting to get them finished now.

Doesn't the tweeter have a "milled" finish quality? (..perhaps I'm picking up on more of a textural quality? - or maybe I'm just nutty today.. )

Yeah, they are not the same color.. with the black laquer and silver paint I think I actually prefer the milled stainless steel over the tweeter's finish - it seems to really pick-up both the black and silver superbly.

In any event - it looks fantastic!

As to the base:

I'm not sure accuracy is neccesary (at least not anywhere near the finish quality of rest of the speaker).. some masking and an air brush/compressor (borrowed if need be), should work rather well.

Thanks Scott.

The tweeter is milled but its a very very fine texture and you need to get within a couple of inches to see this. From any other distance it just looks like matte alu.

I can't really remove the leg now since all the silicon I poured down it will have set around the threaded end cap that fasten onto the foot. I may get some black permanent marker around that alu bit on the foot or something, it would probably look worse than it does now though. I guess as long as the important bits look good then the foot isn't really that much of problem until I get the itch. 🙂

The black permant marker may well do the trick!

Ahh, you implemented my suggestion on the silicone fill for the pipe leg, bet it has some "heft" to it.. 😀

Thanks for the suggestion, the pipe rang like Big Ben with just a gentle flick. With the silicon in its near dead.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that the caulking gun *just* fit down the pipe so I was able to fill from the bottom up. It took around 1.5 tubes of silicon with zero mess, I had vision of having to poke the stuff to the bottom and a huge mess. God only knows how long the bit in the middle will take to set but the parts exposed to the air where set nicely.
