passive volume control without losing dBs?

linear or log?

it's basically a headphone volume control yeah, the signal is already amplified, i just want to put a pot between it (well one of the channels) and the headphones to gradually, linearly, turn the volume from whatever level it's coming at when the pot is maxed, to 0 at min.

If 1kΩ log pot is hard to get, you can use a linear one with 100Ω resistor across wiper to ground.
so it turns out you were right, 1k log is hard to find. but I ended up getting 1k linears, and i'm very satisfied with the response. got a wide range of low value resistors but they didn't seem do do anything noticeable wired across wiper to ground, so I'm gonna go ahead and do this with the 1k linears and no resistors, simple and works well for me.

thank you very much for all who helped!
