Estimated gb price is about 50,- $ (not matched) for one of them. That's of course a lot of money, but this silicon carbide material has fantastic physical qualities. By now I only knew SiC for abrasives and angle grinder discs. It's almost as tough as cristalline carbon (yes - diamonds! 😉)! The cristalline structure is also quite similar. When used for semiconductors they can bear temperatures up to 600°C/1111F under lab conditions. Semisouth jFets are good for 200°C-300°C! Don't forget to consider its very low distortion - pretty good stuff for you and me! 🙂

Glowing jFets...😛 -can't come closer to a tube!

Nelson,
In that great Six Moons article about the J-2 with Variac and others attending at your hideout in the mountains they made mention of the Emminence Beta as being one of the bass components in your setup for listening/testing the Lowthers, Feastrix and other high end full range drivers. Which particular Beta model are you using and why did you choose that particular speaker. There are of course numerous much more expensive products, not necessarily better, from which to choose. And could you elaborate on some of the preferred crossover points.
With the finest hardware available for you to choose from this area is of great interest. It is like what car does Dr. Porsche actually drive everyday.

I have been using the Eminence Beta 15", chosen because
it is good and it is cheap.

Good and cheap describes the criteria for DIY articles, and the
BOB (Big Open Baffle project) mostly concerns itself with
drivers that DIYers can afford, with the possible exceptions
of Lowther and Feastrex.

That said, it is quite good.

😎

Nelson,
With all of the First Watt products, the diy candy you hand out and the full range speaker testing who is running Pass Labs these days? From the looks of your garage and workshop you have plenty to do at home.
Are any new designs underway for the Pass Labs logo? Have you given up on big hulking 1000 watt amps? Are we confident that the sounds of T-Rex's footsteps in Jurassic Park can be reproduced with less than 100 watts?

It is true that I am very busy at the moment, although I hope
to clear some of that away soon. Fortunately Pass Labs is
very well run by four talented people - Desmond, Joe, Elena
and Kent. Wayne and I get to wander around in a less
organized way.

As to new things from Pass Labs, this year we announced the
SR2 loudspeakers, the INT30A and X260.5 amplifiers, and
the XP15 and XP25 phono stages, and the XP20 line stage.

We will have some concept amplifiers at CES. You don't
want to know...

Next week we will post the article "The Sweet Spot" on
