12ax7 can pull as much as .5 mA on the grid before it starts welding itself. but thats like driving a stage 8 to 10 x the normal signal level.

Where is this information from ? 0.5 mA looks very small current to be even near of "welding".
a 12ax7 lasts 20 minutes being driven by a 50 watt amp. at 65 volts rms. The octal line stage tube 6sn7 can handle that 10-15 gigs.
I would go much beyond 25 watt amp into a 12ax7 as there is not that much past 10-15 watts continuous.
