Overdriving the grid of a triode

12ax7 can pull as much as .5 mA on the grid before it starts welding itself. but thats like driving a stage 8 to 10 x the normal signal level.

the two basic methods for distortion effect is either skew the linearity of amplification of a line stage or modify the signal between two buffer amps.

a 12ax7 lasts 20 minutes being driven by a 50 watt amp. at 65 volts rms. The octal line stage tube 6sn7 can handle that 10-15 gigs.

I would go much beyond 25 watt amp into a 12ax7 as there is not that much past 10-15 watts continuous.

grid current is in the micro amps usually.
