My computer failed to boot up one morning after being fine the night before. It gave all the symptoms of mother board being the problem. However put a new bios battery in and it worked. SO I wonder how many failures are really only the battery going flat?

My computer sometimes will not turn on after the initial boot up screen. Screen goes black and nothing happens. Then when I reboot it comes on again as if nothing was wrong ! Just wondering when it will never turn on !😱
Another problem is when the screen suddenly goes black and often nothing seems to happen but at times I see an enlarged pointer somewhere on the screen which does not respond to anything. Then after a couple of minutes or so it will reboot on it's own ! ( Bios battery is new!)
So before it really drops dead I have a new computer coming up. All important data has already been saved to an external HDD. I was told that WD appears to be more reliable than Seagate. I don't know but I switched from Seagate after several drive crashes. Don't have enough WD's to comment on their reliability.
Maybe I should make the boot drive a SSD on the new computer ?
Maybe this thread should be moved to ' equipment and tools' or 'everything else' ?

Using an SSD as a boot drive is a good idea, not only for reliability but also for performance. I was shocked how big a difference it made in system (17'' notebook with core I7, 16GB memory, geforce GT650, 128GB SSD, 750GB HDD)

Actually checking the battery first is a good way to start the troubleshooting process.

I have an equal number of dead Seagates and WDs. I think they are equal in quality.
