despite the other thread, my nakamichi cd player 4 has a strange problem. If the rooms temperature is less than 20degrees celsius, the player only reads cds after some minutes warm-up and might even quit while playing under cracklin' noise. What is that? Laser unit needs to be replaced?? It's a kss210a - has the player to be adjusted after replacement? The pcb offers VCO, EFM Signal, EF balance, focus gain and track gain adjustment but needs a special test. Neither do i have this nor the 2channel oscilloscope (but the service manual)...

OK, see other thread: Skipping and failure during play is unfortunately caused by a damage to one of the gear wheels of the ksm210 drive unit.
Warm up problem still unsolved...

Yes, its a circa 1990 nakamichi and I started resoldering until I found that mechanical failure in the drive. Won't be able to verify resoldering until i get a new gear wheel - and that's gonna be hard enough

I don't know about Germany but there's a dealer/service center in the Netherlands.

I have the same exact warmup problem in my Marantz 53 cd player. It's a '91-'92 model. I just leave it on, but I would like to resolve it.

round cracks in solder points
Take a look at the solder points especially near and around the hot components (if too old, then everywhere), you will find a circle on the solder points which is a crack. This opens the connection, and probably makes connection due to expansion when the device is kept on.
Use lens or eye loupe if having sight problems for close observation.
Solder the cracked points (its best if done for all the solder points) but care should be taken not to form solder bridges.
Change all the electrolytics that are close to hot devices.
Beware: Take all the precautions necessary in handling.

A massive resoldering did the job - I had to work on it anyway cause of my distortion problem. Bought the whole thing cheap for only 12euros and it very much looks like it's seen some service before...

cd player 4 reads cd after warmup
Hello,
i have two CD player 4 here with this problem.
after 10-15 minutes warmup the player reads CD.
I found a FOCUS problem: the lens on the laser does no raise up enough. When i push on the CD to reach the lens focus point, the CD start to play.
After a few minutes, focus have more powe and the player starts by itself.
Replacing the laser does not resolve the problem, i tried...
Does someone have an idea?
thanks!

Hi
Solder the cracked point and make revision on electrolytic cond. (look for leakage)
Have fun
i tried everything i know...
Hello,
i tried resoldering of all the complete circuit, i replaced capacitors in psu, i still have the same problem.
i found that the focus voltage coming out of the sony servo IC oscillates from -0.4v to -3.5v so it never goes into positive driving of the focus coil. the lens goes down and returns to original position, never goes up to reach focus point. -5v and +5v on the ic are correct. The IC is CXA1082BS, maybe replacing it will fix the unit...
very strange...

Hi
Do you check datasheet of CXA1082BS,
What about the element-transistor around FED and FE - ?
Around this IC is the capacitors Electrolytic ? Check maybe to old..

SOLVED warmup problem on CD Player 4
Hi,
i found the solution!
i tried replacing the ic CXA1082BS with no success.
Then i searched around the ic and i found a defective capacitor C122 (15µF/16V) and when i removed this capacitor, there was some brown juice on the leads. (see photos)
I tried to replace it with 22µF and it does not work. Then i tried with 10µF and it works fine! Now the focus is doing it's normal oscillation, the lens goes up and down normally.
I have 2 units of this CD Player4 here and these 2 units have the same problem, solved by replacing this capacitor. So i think this can help someone else!
You can see the attached circuit with the capacitor C122 in a red circle.
Have a good day!
