I am actually half-way building Aleph 4, not the first watt F4. I am having problem with the turn-off of the amp with a dc offset voltage swing of -3.7 volt. I will further talk to you through email.

Okay, I admit that this is a dumb question, but can anyone help me understand what I need to properly add insulated heatsinks to the transistors on the Aleph P 1.7 PCBs? Several people on this thread have indicated that the heatsink should be electrically isolated from the transistor. A mica or similar insulator sits between the transistor and heatsink, but doesn't the metal nut and bolt electrically connect the two? Is there such a thing as a heat-resistant plastic bolt? Does anyone offer a package that includes the mica and associated hardware?
All help, even if derisively offered, will be appreciated.

AFAIK, this is normally done with a nylon step washer under the bolt head. Mouser and most electronics vendors have TO-220 mounting kits available (Mouser 532-4880SG for example). I think ratshack even has these, or at least used to.
As far as what heatsinks people are using, I would be interested in knowing this as well.

Normal To-220 package provides isolation, including nut and bolt. Just check your vender's provision.

I purchased matched parts from Tarasque and will purchase the remaining parts from Digikey or Mouser. Heat sinks and isolation must be separately purchased. Pars' suggestion looks good to me; now I just have to figure out which heat sinks make sense for Veteran's PCBs. I don't know how much heat dissipation is needed, so I'll probably try to get the largest heat sinks that will fit in the somewhat cramped space.
Anyone have a recommendation?

Heat sinks and isolation must be separately purchased.
I also purchase likewise. I guess that should not be a problem with heat management, some little kind of heatsink going with the "small" design .. , matching, I think is more critical.

Will any cheap cap from the local shop do or should i pay attention to what kind/brand i use? I suppose they don't need to be blackgates since they are not in the signal path... any sugestions?

Look at BACO army goods, they got some pritty cheap nippons, and you can also take some more capacitance if you wish, for instance, after a while I went from 1000uf 100V to 4700uf 80V and it made the sound more open, better detail, more dynamics. Succes, Teake

Where is the best place to connect the volume control on the aleph preamp. Will it accept a single end connection from source. Just got the boards and was needing this bit of information. thanks Tad

the pod may be fitted on the input, the output or while using a variable gain.
It may be single ended thus lacking the option of the symmetric design of the Aleph P.

In order to best take advantage of the Aleph design an input transformer positioned to split the single ended signal to balanced plus and minus would function quite well. I would like to stay away from op amps since that was the idea behind the Aleph choice.

Connect a single ended source and the design of the P will do the rest.

Actually, I am looking for suggestions for another project, but they could also be used for this board.
How would you get a symetrical signal on both outputs if ground is fed into both the ground and In- terminals. The in- side would just pass ground out to the out- output, correct?

...about the single ended input with the inverted phase grounded and then having a symmetric output of the signal...that is the principal object of the Aleph P design. I don´t think we have to run through every detail of the circuitry to explain that (it is explained in the service manual of Nelson Pass´s Aleph P).
A 10k pod on the output is what I use. It is a 4 channel conductive plastic pod which is laser trimmed to less than 0,2dB tolerance.
Not inexpensive but better than any pod I´ve heard so far (I did some testing on a passive preamp).

I just did not know if it needed a true balanced input, ie transformer or opamp line driver, in order to obtain decent sound quality. I had wanted to use the Aleph to bridge my Leach clone amps. thanks Tad

What size power transformer is everyone using? 60 x 60 at what current rating?
