Well to better describe my home theatre area and current (sorry to say) 😱 non DIY equipment (except for HTPC, i build it piece by piece).

I will show now the home theatre room and open space next to it and equipment. the corresponding images are for current front lcd tv and satellites and place for the new DIY towers, open space area next to the 14 m2 room, the surround satellites place, the amplifier (up to 192Khz sampling, HD format audio, ultra thx), htpc(everything full high definition capable with blue ray and audio HDMI out), dvd, cable tv, and DVB-S2 PC receiver,

I have carefully done the setup, i really need to make nice looking towers, anyhow i am using help of the carpenter who made the TV stand that you are going to see, i designed it with him myself and chosen the colors, spacing, etc.

The speakers you have put into this post showing the Energy take classic micro's will never be able to keep up with what you need for that size of room, they are mainly designed for apartment size places, ( way smaller than your area )

The sub is a very good one tho, used many and they have huge output plus clean accurate bass, if setup properly.

I see on your receiver that you have your movie playing in Dolb-2 movie. ? It looks like it is not encoding properly ? What are you using for your main source ? Is it setup to always use dolby2 ? It should be set to auto, so it can determine the correct output for the movie.

Are you doing hdmi switching ? Have you setup all your hdmi outputs properly so they are encoded correctly ? or is it just plugged in and working ?

is your up-scaling dvd player using hdmi also ? have you tried using coax/optical out at all ? I know some hdmi devices don't always decode / send out the correct audio formats because it gets lost, from connectivity / synch.

On that sub, can't remember if it has phase or not, if so is it setup for it to be in the rear ? ( not the front )

My Personal opinion would be not to use full range speakers for your surround sound setup, only because if you are watching a action / loud movie and a bass note hits, then you might cook your driver IE the cone laying on the floor smoking away.

Just some thought for food!

Forget about power ratings... they are pretty close to meaningless in the contecxt of a home system.

This is probably the best 2 driver box we have done yet... here with EL70, but can also fit CHR70. One driver front-firing, one up-firing.

I have a whole set of support cabinets (for the CHR) for home theatre. And there are a number of variations on the idea.

jleaman, thanks for the info, well it was showing dolby 2 because i was playing with the remote, usually it decodes correctly the hdmi signal for both dvd and bluray in the HTPC. I am not currently doing HDMI switching if by switching you mean that when i turn one hdmi units the others are syncronized with it. As for phase, yes the sub has phase control, but i set it to the zero position, i dunno if the amplifier is doing anything in this regard, i know the amp is the one with the XO setting not the sub (put at 100 Hz). i did not by the way use coaxial as i am using hdmi upscaling for DVD and HDMI for the HTPC. I tried analog once to test the output of the sound card and input of the receiver. Basically i ended only using HDMI which is good, the cables are good.

Nice looking speakers you have dave. The EL70s are a good bargain and value it seems.

well i will stop my ongoing questions for a while, do some little bit more research and come back with something physical 🙂 i am hunting for drivers next to me. there is one guy selling an old "JENSEN" 3 way pair with 8 inch woofers, i dont know it they are good. tried to look on the net, and it seems they dont make these anymore! he is asking for 150 USD for them. i can use their drivers in a new tower.

The Jensen speakers seem to look like the ones in the attached pic that i found on ebay (they guy on ebay is selling for around 50 USD possibly based on the condition, they dont seem to be a great buy (not an expert). i didnt see them from inside in the shop that is selling them so i am not sure if they are 3 way and the exact dimensions of the drivers.

Set your subwoofer to 180, the amplifier will not setup its phase at all, the amplifier will only do frequancy and volume,, have you run the calibration mic on the amp yet ?

Hdmi switching is done with the receiver, ie the tv is connected to hdmi out of the receiver, and all other devices connected to the amplifier, ie switch to dvd u see dvd u switch to hdpc ( what ever hdmi port its plugged into on the amp ) and you see your htpc.

If i were you, i would also turn off any anynet/hdmi control features on your devices and TV, it will save you head aches now 🙂

Why not buy a speaker kit for this ? Partsexpress or from solen or madisound ? Or surf around on here and look for some nice tower designs.

yes jleaman i did go through the calibration howerver i will change the phase to +180 and see how things change. As for speaker kits, my only problem is that i need to ship it internationally and moreover pay taxes and customs fees etc which will reach around 250 USD (shipping, customs, taxes, etc. ) depending of course on weight and price. i am checking if i can escape this by waiting till i travel to the US or someone getting it for me, or other options before paying these 250 USD that i can make use by investing in the box and aesthetics. It is my first DIY loudspeaker project or lets say the first serious one.

As your self a New "B", i would buy a nice set of speakers for the front & matching center ( ish ) and build some rear speakers, it will help you how to build boxes and construction, once those are built working and u like them, then build a nice set of front speakers, take it slow learn first on cheaper project then advance to bigger things. Your first time speaker being a big project might show some disappointment, starting and learning slowly will allow you to see what you are capable, if you have all the wood tools and are good with wood, then disregard 🙂

Also, is your dvd player setup to encode/decode to bitstream or pcm ? Are you only running hdmi or are you using a optical/coax cable ?

my dvd is bitstreaming at 96khz. no all the way HDMI 🙂

then thats why your on dolb2 🙂 Change it to pcm, if it's on bitstream then it's not decoding properly, bitstream is for optical/cox output.

Make sure your amp is set to Decode, so you actually get your DolbyDigital 🙂

Dolby Digital won't come on or work if u have it setup with hdmi & bitstream 🙂

with my LG dvd player it did, i mean the receiver has shown dolby digital and dts using this configuration. By the way, i got the loudspeaker design cookbook and going to start to read it, before advancing much, i might post the pics of the unbranded drivers that i might use. 8 inch or 6.5 inch for woofers dont know yet. The cross over is a tricky part but i am not far from this. I have studied electrical engineering but they dont teach you this at school. the notions are there, but unfortunatly i worked in the IT field an did masters in computer engineering and recently into a more administrative work. things are rusty 🙂

Diy audio is here to help 🙂

6.5" drivers are a good size, thats what i use and see all over in the audio.video field.

Here are the pics of the 6.5 inch and 8 inch woofers where i can get them in the shop i know. they are from EKT | Electronics and Security. very cheap drivers, didnt find much data on them and i found some info on the brother of the 8 inch driver over the net with difficulty, it was a 12 inch had around as i recall 38 to 5000 Hz rsponse and resonant freq of 54 Hz something. dont recall much. I dont know if i even should try with these as woofers, would i get any quality. There are as well 5 inch mid ranges and 4 inch! tweeters.

Doesn't look like any thing appealing 🙁 Any where else in your country / close to you that sells raw speaker drivers ?

i beleive there are but difficult to find, and the known ones ask for a lot. today i called the shop that sells Davis speakers to ask for a 5 inch woofer. one of their towers (priced at 1350 USD for the pair) that has 80 watts/channel rated power needs two woofers of this model and 1 midrange and 1 tweeter. the price of the woofer alone is 120 dollars, so 2 woofers it is 240 dollars/channel without the tweeter and mid range yet. so very expensive.

here you can find home theatre stuff but the ones (that are not home theatre in a box) are usually very expensive due to lack of demand, few people buy them, and they just stay in the inventory without depreciation. that is why i bought my receiver and speakers from the US this summer when i was there. i am seeking used stuff though and looking for other shops, but it will take time to find these.

I have not yet set a budget for this project. but theoretically it shouldnt be the same price as a manufactured speaker 🙂

I run a set of Davis Drivers, Chrisb & Planet10 Helped me do box design and crossover.

LOVE THE speakers too!

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Hey jleaman,

I made some search (but not much) this weekend, unfortunately i still cannot find acceptably priced good quality drivers, for example it seems that buying a production Davis tower might be equivalent or even cheaper in price then its individual parts for the main reason that it seems the market here is more for selling complete speakers (i.e. with box, etc.) then individual drivers at least in the HI fI and Home theatre worlds (they consider the individual drivers as spare parts, so that is why they sell them at high prices). As for professional loudspeakers, you might be able to get some spare drivers but not of that super quality. I got an offer for the pair of Matisse Davis speakers shown in the pic for less then 700 USD, possibly 650 or less if i bargain (I am showing it for the sake of showing the drivers in it, they are 5 inch drivers (13cm) as i presume, the most expensive driver in them is 120 USD, i presume it is the kevlar yellow one). But anyhow getting back to DIY for now, i was able to get the specs for the 12 inch version for the 8 inch driver i showed earlier. I will state it here at the end of this post. A question would be, if we consider that these specs are correct, can the 8 inch sibling (with comparable specs) of this driver perform in a good manner if well equalized through a good receiver and if we add a tweeter for a 2 way speaker tower? so it comes to an old question, will modest drivers perform well if coupled with good box and receiver?

the specs as seen on a Chinese site are (unfortunatly i couldnt find a graph):
