Recently finished the complete Scanspeak D30 model after closely looking at the construction details of the real thing. Its a very novel driver in its approach.
And here's a couple of renders, enjoy.

Damn, your really getting good at that! 🙂
How long did it take? (..both your time and computation time.)

Thanks Scott.
About 10 hours for the model and the rendering took 40mins.
You can render at much higher settings (these were done at 'normal) but whilst this takes exponentially longer the visual quality increase is relatively small. The 'normal' setting is the best trade off between quality and time.
Hi Arthur,
The models are created with Solidworks 2011 and then rendered within Keyshot 2 Pro.

I'm an investor in rare-earth stocks - I expect the rare-earth prices to remain high and probably rise further due to China (who supplys 95% of the market) tightening quotas.
I guess the Chinese hired the consulting firm from O.P.E.C.😉 Isn't Free Trade grand!
Very nice indeed, though you could do with a few more polys round the curved faceplate edge as I can just see some straight edges. Lovely work nonetheless.
Actually just ignore that comment I'm being a pedantic ****.

When I first saw the pics I thought they were photographs and when I read on, discovered just how good these drawings really are.
Shin,
are you training for some trade?
If you want to know more about rare earth issue, here is an interesting article

I like the way you think 🙂
That's the granularity setting within Solidworks, I keep it at an intermediate setting otherwise you can experience slow down within the view port area of workspace when working with complex models. If you slide it all the way up then the profiles appear as a perfectly formed curve rather than an approximation drawn from line segments.
My oversight was that I should have upped that setting before importing into the renderer for a slightly better result.
Love to be able to have a crack at Solidworks, haven't tried it myself, mainly 3d Studio, Maya and many moons ago Softimage.
Concept I'm currently working on for the lifestyle market.

Not as such I work for a company called Cathelco helping design, amongst other things, the casework, fixings and housings for ship hull corrosion protection systems. Day to day I'm often using Solidworks for general work and designs so this naturally extends over into my loudspeaker interests.

That looks fantastic. You've got some really nice quality materials there.
That's something I'm lacking - a nice library of materials. Keyshot is capable of photo realism but unless the materials are good you'll never get that.
I've seen some amazing renders done with it including these by David Burgess:
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

...I still consider myself having a loooong way to go yet 😀 But its all good fun and sometimes I surprise myself.
Demand for rare earth materials will for sure go up, and until new mines are opened or reopened, or until the huge Japanese underwater rare earth metal finding will start produce magnets, I do not see that neo magnets will go down in price.
The Chinese are scaringly smart/egoistic about their raw materials.
Fantastic renderings, Shin!

Neodymium which is used to electric/hybrid cars and wind turbines is especially in high demand.
Beautiful design...remind me the Rockport Technologies Mira.
Hope to see the rest of your project soon! 🙂

I'm putting the little Avante on hold as I'm not happy enough with the sound overall especially when its used a 3-way. Need to rethink drivers and start afresh. I'm think probably either a 2-way or 3-way and not something that tries to be both. If its a 2-way then I think a 6.5" is a minimum rather than a 4.5" like the Seas.
The Aurora also under went a few alterations recently and I've now changed the mid/bass driver to the Scanspeak 15M and the tweeter I already talked about in the last post. I'm still playing but I think the new driver lineup sounds even more natural than the RAAL/AT combo but I do notice a loss in some apparent HF resolution. Overall it sounds different if not absolutely better. When faced with a situation like that more secondary considerations like cost come into view and the Scanspeak combination is cheaper than the RAAL and Audiotechnology so I'd place the value higher as a result.
At this point all this waiting around to build something is leading to over development where I'm changing a speaker that is already good and doesn't really need much more attention 🙂 But its still fun and I can't remember the last time I had so many driver combinations to listen to.
As soon as I can get a new front on the garage and couple of other chores out the way work will begin.
But for now here's yet another updated render.

What's that? Did someone say drivers? 😀
Driver lineup for Aurora:
And I'm quite liking the all black version vs. the pearl/black.
Ref; Driver line up photo - why 2 tweeters?
Ref: floor standing photos - what are the driver line ups in those three photos? One looks like it has a SEAS Excel midwoofer.
Beautiful design...remind me the Rockport Technologies Mira.
There was a time (when the NHT 3.3) first came when many companies decided to mount woofers on the side of the cabinet.

What now? Accuton?🙂
