...any of you use a mono OB speaker in your regular system? How do you think it compares to stereo OB or stereo box speakers?
I want to build a speaker similar to Reflector Audio P18 (but with a coax in place of the 2" compression driver). Two of those and the associated active amps and cabling would be unbearable in the living room. But just one is doable 🙂🙂🙂

Adason, I am now asking for help from owners of OB speakers. Can you please compare your stereo OB system with single speaker mono OB and report back? You may plug one ear while at it 😄
Here is my rationale for considering mono OB:
Stereo is invented to increase spaciousness and widen soundstage. OB is naturally more spacious and has wider soundstage. Can mono OB be a sensible compromise?

A single dipole from 200Hz up sounds pretty good with two ears. Bass can be monopole, but treble must give some backside radiation too. Use an auxiliary driver for that, and project it 30-45deg up. Front wall must be reflective and don't push the speaker in a corner.
You can test this by usiing two regular speakers back to back (or towered) and feeding mono signal. It is monopole, but difference to dipole isn't big and you don't need bass eq.

Dear Juha,
I have owned no box speakers since 2010 😄
My experiments with an AMT tweeter taught me that HF back radiation is a hit and miss thing; in some rooms and placement it works wonders and not so much in others. My trials show that I can happily live with a pro coax driver on OB. Once I have a permanent room and place I can also try adding a 45degree backfiring compression driver like you and Kimmosto suggest.
I really like OB bass. It is clean, fast and most importantly neighbour friendly (I plan to live in an apartment). My sub choice will probably be two 21"s, slot loaded OB and integrated into the coffee table facedown.
No lying, I am aroused with the mental image of a mono OB with 4x18". Such is hobbying.
*Two 21"s facedown, omg gotta go 🤣

I am disgusted by the idea of summing two perfect stereo image signals, that the studio worked so hard to create, into one useless boring mono signal. So much information lost.
But the fact that you are aroused makes me happy for you.

Adason, can we say that you are aroused by the stereo image? 🙃
Joke aside, have you compared stereo Vs mono OB side by side though?

No, not aroused. But my hifi is so good sounding now, that some songs bring tears to my eyes, which can be embarrassing.
