NwAvGuy: The Audio Genius Who Vanished

I like the measurement centric approach from NwAvGuy.

Just "Sound Good" don't cut it for me - unless i hear it myself 😀. Joke aside, who other than I can listen through my ears?

If NwAvGuy was indeed Hans Camenzind then he was a genius. Maybe less in audio but please check what Hans Camenzind has created. BTW it takes non-geniuses to recognize a genius as geniuses don't recognize other geniuses...

I am sure most of us used the 555 time chip one time or another... not to mention PLL's....

Odd, he claimed an output Z of fraction of an ohm for his O2 headphone amp, but the circuit is just a pair of 4556 opamps run in parallel but each through a series 1.0 ohm resistor... I dunno.

...someone might contact the folks listed as providing PCBs and the like for the O2, they might have been in touch with him as a regular person?

_-_-bear

Well, let's not go down this road... I was just surprised at the use of two basic opamps in parallel, and the way that the specs were compared between other headphone amps.

One of the other units showed an order of magnitude lower measured THD, but only 80dB or so noise floor... which on the surface seems contrary in an of itself.

Also is a low output resistance (high DF) really best for headphones, since they seem to typically give the subjective sense of not all that much low end?

Wait, I just opened the can of worms that I said I was not.
Bah, this poster is a jerk.
Ignore him.
Me. Ignore me.

I found this on another forum......
Another conspiracy theory......😉

"Ah yes, the demise of a fictional hero character. How Greek. I like the little flourish about Nwavguy being an artistic genius. Now this crap smells even more fishy than before as all red herrings do. Nwavguy, the John Galt of audio, what a load of sh1t. My wildest theory seems to be coming to pass. A family member didn't die, a fictional character was killed after it served its purpose and was too much trouble to maintain. Let me guess, those initials were J.D.S. Who, among many coincidences, moved his whole operation to a new HQ the same time nwav stopped the blog. Also suddenly acquired a dscope around the same time too. We all knew nwav advertised having one"..

According to the IEEE article, they don't know who he is. They wanted to contact him when a minor PCB redesign was needed to accomodate a change in a socket design (larger pins) but they could not. Strictly speaking, the licence he granted them did not allow for this but they did it anyway as it did not change functionality.

Interesting legal question: can an anonymous person enforce a licence?
Interesting moral question: should we worry about violating a licence granted by an anonymous person?

I understand he used one of the licence wordings more usually associated with free software. This granted the licensee freedom to use his design without charge but, perhaps unusually, forbad any modifications or derivative works. I have thrown away the IEEE comic with the write-up in it and I can't remember the details.
