But anyone who wishes to lay out their own is certainly entitled to do that without a "license."
In Europe copyright covers derivative works too. A new PCB layout could be regarded as derivative from the circuit diagram so could be held to be an infringement of the circuit copyright. However, copyright infringement is a civil matter so it is up to the IP owner to sue and this rarely happens in non-commercial situations. We don't have quite the same tradition of threatening letters from tame lawyers.

How would anyone know you copied it ?
That is a separate issue: enforcement.

I found this on another forum......
Another conspiracy theory......😉

"Ah yes, the demise of a fictional hero character. How Greek. I like the little flourish about Nwavguy being an artistic genius. Now this crap smells even more fishy than before as all red herrings do. Nwavguy, the John Galt of audio, what a load of sh1t. My wildest theory seems to be coming to pass. A family member didn't die, a fictional character was killed after it served its purpose and was too much trouble to maintain. Let me guess, those initials were J.D.S. Who, among many coincidences, moved his whole operation to a new HQ the same time nwav stopped the blog. Also suddenly acquired a dscope around the same time too. We all knew nwav advertised having one"..

Who is JDS ? What company is he currently working for ? Given the quality of his work and the effort he put into writing everything up I'd think it was just as well he got a nice earner out of it in the end.

I like the measurement centric approach from NwAvGuy.

Just "Sound Good" don't cut it for me - unless i hear it myself 😀. Joke aside, who other than I can listen through my ears?

Yeah, I agree. He was really a "no-BS" kind of guy. I get tired of audiophiles who insist on "chip rolling" and "tube rolling", thinking that they can improve on the designer's intent, or who come up with wild theories about why this or that "sounds better".

Yes I saw that and some of the subsequent posts, and immediately thought it sounded plausible. Right from the beginning the O2 smelt like a commercial venture. I suspect we will never know what the true story is/was.

Tony.

very odd and indirect means of "self promotion" or way to advance a "commercial interest" to not claim the reputation earned, and to leave the designs public

I didn't see him that way. I thought his extensive analysis and discussion on his website was impressive, but I didn't sense any self promotion nor any commercial interest. I didn't read everything he wrote either.

The smell of commercialism was not the blog, but the highly organized way that group buys sprang up everywhere. lots of people signing up who had never posted before to start a group buy, whether it be for pcb's full BOM's, front pannels or whatever. It was quite something really. Whether or not NWAVguy had any affiliation with this I don't know.

Add in he was banned from HeadFi just before it all started, and that adds some mystique. He was always a model member here (RocketScientist).

The O2 was quite a phenomenon. Whether that was just because it was a good design, or because of some more organized marketing I'll leave to the individual to contemplate 🙂

Tony.

What I find interesting is that during that period, pcb's were made along with other parts & pieces and an E-magazine article was written, so I would think that:
Telephone calls were made.
Personal E-mails were sent.
Components were shipped.
In person contacts may have been made.
Yet any and all persons that were involved became completely silent.

I am a fan of NwAvGuys work and it's a shame he disappeared. Even if he was fictional it would have been nice to sign off. I don't understand how there isn't anyone who can tell us who he really is/was, as I am sure someone knows somewhere. In this day an age I bet some resourceful people could find a digital trail leading back to him. It was really nice to see someone bring measurement and performance realities back into audio design.

I have built two of NwAvGuy's O2 amplifiers and assembled an ODac. I have to say that they are great pieces and perform on the highest level. I even played around with using the O2 as a preamp with favorable results although it didn't best my pass 1.7. The Odac is a hands down winner in my book, I have compared it to my own modified marantz cd67 and a xonar st and it sounds better then both by a long way. It is a giant killer. I doubt I could beat it's performance while keeping within a sane financial range.
