Me and mamselle were driving back from a wedding Saturday night, listening to the Sirius-XM '60s channel with Pat St. John. He played "California Dreamin" with the Mama's and Papa's, followed with the original with Barry McGuire solo. (All you Canadians, Pat St. John got his start on CKLW which was heard throughout the Midwestern US as well as Canada!)
The Mamas and Papas were singing back-up for McGuire and asked if they could do a version for their initial album and he agreed. That's how we got the iconic 1965 version.
Oh, the flute interlude -- one of the group bumped into Bud Shenk in the Boys Room and asked if he could do a couple takes.
The rest is history!
