I always liked Joe Pass's playing. Many years ago (almost 50) I went to a local jazz club to hear him play here in Northern New Jersey. Waited outside in the winter cold to get in. Paid around 8 or 10 bucks cover charge. Eventually got in and the place was packed with people, but we never got to hear him play because he was way too drunk. Turns out he spent the day at Newark airport drinking in the airport bar because no one picked him up until that evening. He started to play a song or two, but stopped short because he just couldn't play right. Then headed off to the men's room to throw up. People started leaving demanding their cover charge back. I'll never forget that night. What a disappointment.
