Faraday takin a bite out your inductor. Funny you should say "old fashioned", I read that as gettn'r done old school. 😉
Ok now I'm totally confused.
When you guys make your own custom speakers how do you wire up all the components?? It's as if you're saying you can't get crossovers for component speakers??

You say that the "cabs were coming apart". You plan to replace all four low frequency drivers at a price of some £60 each. You plan to rebuild from scratch one of the crossovers apparently without a clear understanding of the original crossover. I suspect that you aren't entirely sure of the condition of the tweeters and mid-range drivers.
Are you sure that this is a really good idea?
No. I want to replace both crossovers and upgrade all the speakers.
I want to use the cabs and build myself a se of nice speakers would be a better way of putting it 🙂
Then you are far better at building from scratch a reputable kit, likeNo. I want to replace both crossovers and upgrade all the speakers.

just to name a couple, from different designers. There are other "good" kit, of course, you have to ask yourself what are the objectives and how much are you willing to spend.
As I said before, and explained in the Paul Carmody's FAQ, simply putting some random drivers and an off-the-shelf crossover into an existing cabinet, is a recipe for failure. The only sensible thing to do with the marantz speakers is to recreate one crossover board, and refoam all the woofers (assuming that the mid and tweeters are working).
As I said you have to recreate what is missing. Sorry if that is not what you want to hear, but is the only viable solution to have something that sounds acceptable (I don't know the quality of the speaker when it was new).I want to use the cabs and build myself a se of nice speakers would be a better way of putting it
We design a crossover specifically for the drivers and the enclosure chosen, and thus buy the required caps/coils/resistors (again, it is explained in the FAQ mentioned above). When you guys make your own custom speakers how do you wire up all the components?? It's as if you're saying you can't get crossovers for component speakers??

Great stuff thanks Ralph, fully understood 🙂
It's a shame as the ld300's are a great looking speaker, oh well it's on the fire they go... Luckily I still have my Kef iq70's
I shall now start looking for some other (fully working) speakers.
Thanks for all the info guys (and sorry for being a pain in the a**!)
I honestly didn't know that without the right crossovers for the right cabs and speakers then that rules them useless.
You learn something every day!!
Now to find some JBL L100 Centurys!!

There's probably a kit that you could shoehorn into those cabs just fine if you really want to. I don't really know where the UK people go for good kits, but other people do.
So wouldn't a brand (let's say peerless) make woofers a tweeter a mid and and crossover all suitable for a 100litre speaker??/
Sad that everyone is so faint-hearted about replacing woofers here. It is really quite easy to filter a woofer for any arbitrary crossover point.
SEAS-3-Way-Classic
Why? Well because bass speaker inductance really doesn't matter at 600Hz. The filter behaves as advertised above for 12dB/octave. So all you have to do is adjust the mid and tweeter level and make some estimate of the mids crossover point.
I am still waiting for the marantz crossover schematic. 🙁

Ok here is the picture of the 1 remaining crossover inside the speaker but please note...
I am NOT looking to turn the speakers back to their original state, I want to upgrade all the speakers and crossovers to make them a better speaker.

Well, if you're dragging your feet over this possible restoration of a decent looking design, I'm out. I'd need to know those capacitor and resistor values anyway. And there's markings on the coils.Ok here is the picture of the 1 remaining crossover inside the speaker but please note...

It's second order bass, 4 element mid and second order tweeter. All quite standard.

but if I was to swap the woofers mids and tweeters out for better ones then this crossover wouldn't be any good anyway so whats the point in making another😕
Are the cabinets so good that you think it is worth using them as the basis of a new speaker?
In fairness, I ask as someone who has baulked at shelling out in excess of £200 just to get ply or MDF cut so I can understand why you might want to reuse well made cabinets in good condition. However, you did suggest that they weren't in great condition and it is my understanding that the actual design of the cabinet can't be separated from the choice of drivers and the crossover design.

Yes I work in a paint shop (we paint cars) and I've already clamped and glued one back together and sanded, now its just about ready to the primed then painted. 🙂
It would be interesting if you were to post a couple of photos of the insides of one of the cabinets - how are they braced?
ps - you don't fancy painting some really tatty Quad cases for me do you? 😉

Hahah if I ever get these finished I can!! let me try to get some pics up of the insides, give me half hour!
Ok here ya go!
These are the only 2 braces in the speaker.
I honestly thought it would be a case of throwing in some replacement 8'' woofers, tweets and mids, add a xover and bobs ya uncle... Guess not!!

I used to think much the same until recently, the good folk here soon put me right! If you want to get some sort of understanding (in layman's terms) of crossover design, have a look at Wikipedia (HERE). I am sure there are better places but this helped me to translate some of the jargon.<snip>
