I've never built a tube amp, but I've built 3 ss amps. I have 85db rated speakers at 4 ohm (magneplanar MMG), so I reckon I need about 30 to 40 watts power. What would your recomendations be for an ambitious first tube build?
I've been following the thread on the 6c33c with some interest, would you consider this a good project?

The MMGs have quite a varying impedance curve, going as low as 1.6 ohms if I remember right. They're also very power hungry. A push-pull pentode amp would be your best bet. I know one guy who ran his MMGs off a vintage Fisher 400 and found it quite a good match. If you're looking for PCBs, DIYtube offers inexpensive PCBs for building a clone of the EICO HF-87/89. You might also consider building a clone of the Dynaco ST-70 or MKIII.
With such a dynamic impedance variation, I believe a good, hefty push-pull triode amp will be best. Or triode-strapped pentodes.
