New Module by Lars Clausen

Hi Lars,

There was the question of obtaining some caps from ya, in order to have all bypass caps the same, and I believe that will do alot for soundstage/imaging, and also to try post filter feedback mode.

If nothing else I will take a recommendation or two as to what you intend on using for the new bypass caps, and further recommendation for your preferred feedback resistor.

I'll be completed adding caps to the supply today, and taking it fully balanced fairly soon.

Thanks Lars glad to hear it.

I managed to get some pictures of it onto my computer tonight but they're just taken on a cell and I just see no point in posting them as you can't make anything out it's just too blurry.

The tricky part of the wiring the new caps in is nearly complete, just have to tin all the wires going to the modules and trace them out/triple check everything, before smoke testing it, with the modules disconnected of course.

As I remember, last time I asked you were going to present a comparison when you were satisfied with your smps setup - mind you, my memory isn't what it was.

Your opinion seems similar to mine - Coldamp is warmer, UcD more clinical.

I also found very little difference between UcD180 & 400.

My speakers are a little idiosyncratic (Lowther EX3's with silver voice coils in Icon rear-horn cabinets), so I am wary of pronouncing definitive judgements on relative performance.

Keith

Keith, I don't use a smps yet. This will come later. And about the speakers, I think my Driades 91/JMLabs(Focal)/Wharfdale are a too easy load for the amps. So I want to test them on some hefty(90kg) JMLabs(Focal) speakers. But I am dependant on the person who has these and because he's moving placers I have to be patient. This guy has a nice studio and is a audiofreak(like me).

The launch date is getting closer, and we can begin to see a more detailled schedule.

Right now the PCB's are in assembly, and will go through SMD assembly late next week, then testing, packing and shipment.

The modules will arrive from in our facility on Sep 12th, and we will do testing, packing and start shipping out a couple of days after that. So ca. September 14th is the current launch date.

Since we have received many more pre-orders than expected, it will take us a few days to clear out the order book, so i hope for everyone's patience.

As a little help i can reveal that there are a few extra - yet undisclosed - improvements on the modules, compared to the 'zero series' you have seen on newclassd.com.

Thank You

Excellent Lars
Look forward to hearing the results and reading everybodies posts 😎
thanks

Sorry Bert, on reflection I believe it was Gertjan I asked.

LOL

I left this thread a week or so before C4D got the NCD and I've just returned to read through 20odd pages only to find to a big zero in anything regarding testing or subjective opinions with only lots of nice techno speak that I don't really care about.

What gives Chris? You've had the modules for ages now, surely you can post a few paragraph on the standard guise of the NCD, your modding efforts are commendable but I think what folks are really interested in is how the standard one sounds.

LOL...

At first your post reminded me of... you know sometimes when you go to... and it splits in two directions... and it goes all over cuz you can't hit the bowl.. ah, you probably never pulled your head out long enough to know eh?

Lars, caps? I'm almost ready with the new supply (ten minutes work), made up some brackets that bolt up with the existing mounting bolts, will sit the T-networks right on top of the PCB, one on either side. I'll try and get you all some pics of that too. I was going to get my own camera, but after making those brackets, I figured a dremel would be more useful to me. Should be able to borrow a decent cam next week though.

All I'm waiting for to go fully balanced with it is a trip to the store now, also planned for next week, as I'm going out of town for a wedding this weekend.

At least let me know if you've sent the caps or still plan to, before I order my own.

I'll let you all know how the added caps helped out/or not later today. I'm at least hoping the bass won't be so strained.

Cheers,
Chris

Why don't you try with a phone cam first? These are much more common to come by, at least in these neck of the woods.

Does NCD1 have built-in DC nulling of a kind?

A while ago I was reading about one of the older Zappulse modules, and the importance of avoiding DC on their input was stressed.

I suppose it's quite common to have a few mV of DC on the preamp output, coming from sources such as sound cards and some diy DACs - unless the preamp has a decoupling cap or DC servo. Usually the servo or cap in the power amp takes care of that...

And so I was just wondering how the NCD-1 would handle a bit of DC on its input?
